FIRST, THE BAD NEWS
• The City of Toronto has been declared a “high risk employer” by the Ontario Ministry of Labour due to its poor health and safety record.
• For the second year in a row, Toronto landlords attempted to evict a record number of tenants.
• It turns out that pretty much the only place you can smoke indoors in Toronto is the CBC building on Front Street, which contains two strangely legal smoking lounges for staff.
• The Docks has won back its liquor licence, which may be bad news for residents of the Toronto Islands, who complain about the noise from the club... and bad news for the rest of us who complain about the noise from complaining islanders.
• The number of people in Ontario suffering from diabetes has doubled since 1995.
• Ice falling off the CN Tower!
*GOD IS IN THE DETAILS
By Shawn Micallef
Larry Sefton Park The gentle rehabilitation of Nathan Phillips Square has all our attention right now but out back, tucked in between City Hall and a hydro substation, is Larry Sefton Park. It's a cute and brutalist pocket park, commissioned by the United Steel Workers of America in 1977 in memory of Sefton, a long-time union leader. Though some of the benches and the built-in fountain are broken, the indestructible steel I-Beams burst out of the concrete dramatically, making this quiet place seem like Superman's Fortress of Solitude.
* Speed the plows
I'm as much in favour of a Bloor Street bike lane as Hamish Wilson (“Pedal pushing,” Letters, March 1). However, given the six-year wait and the puzzling timidity of David Miller, the likelihood of it happening before the glaciers disappear remains slim. I would settle for snow plowing to the curbs on those few streets with bike lanes. The ones on College west of Bay are usually a mess. If we're lucky, we can see and (precariously) ride on the dividing line. If we get Bloor, let's hope the plows aren't operated by bike-lane denier Case Ootes. GEOFF RYTELL
