What I particularly love about Easter is the joy it brings to all those tired old atheist hacks who can sell articles to newspapers explaining why Easter isn't Easter, Jesus wasn't Jesus and Cadbury Creme Eggs are all some sort of Christian conspiracy to cause obesity and heart disease.

The Earth moves and all that seems stable collapses. The earthquake in Italy this past week was only the latest to remind us that even this solid Earth is no sure foundation. In terms of loss of life it was minor in comparison to, for example, the Chinese earthquake last year that killed tens of thousands. The devastation is real though, not just in lives lost and property destroyed, but in the cultural heritage of centuries that was laid waste.
Yesterday was a national day of mourning in Italy, and a mass funeral was held in L’Aquila. It was Good Friday. Perhaps some of those mourners were struck by the account we have in Matthew’s Gospel of the hour of Jesus’ death on that original Friday afternoon: And Jesus cried again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom; and the Earth shook, and the rocks were split; the tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
