To describe the past six months as baffling is to understate the obvious. Last fall America was on a high: the presidency of the stunningly unpopular George Bush was drawing to an ignominious end, and the election of Barak Obama seemed to break the highest barrier of race in American politics. America wallowed in hope, change, and optimism. Even with a gathering financial storm on the horizon, all seemed possible; real change seemed inevitable, at least to the non-cynical.
