Paul Russell: Raining on their tea parties

Complaints to the National Post usually focus on stories that have been published. But sometimes, readers are dismayed about events they feel the paper has failed to cover properly.
For example, notes started to come in mid-week, asking why we didn’t cover any of the various “tea parties” held across the United States this week, in which conservatives protested against government spending. On Friday, those queries turned nasty, after we published a column by left-leaning pundit Paul Krugman. He described the supposedly spontaneous tea parties as “AstroTurf (fake grassroots) events, manufactured by the usual suspects,” in a column titled, “The GOP has gone nuts (again).”
“This column by Paul Krugman would be laughable if it were not so indicative of the shameful state of the news media today,” wrote Sue Reid. “When these [tea parties] became too large and too widespread to ignore any longer, the mainstream media did what it always seems to do — degrade, name-call and marginalize … The media used to be the watchdog for the people. True journalists would have honestly reported on what was in fact a truly remarkable display by large numbers of Americans expressing their dissatisfaction with the direction their country is moving in. Unfortunately, as usual, the mainstream media has gone nuts (again).”
