Forty-eight years ago this weekend, Francisco (Pepe) Hernandez stormed ashore in the Bay of Pigs, one of 1,500 Cuban exiles participating in a CIA-sponsored invasion aimed at overthrowing Fidel Castro's Cuban Revolution.
Today, the president of the Cuban American National Foundation, historically the most powerful and implacable anti-Castro organization in the Cuban exile community, is applauding moves to loosen the United States' 47-year-old economic blockade of Cuba.
"For 50 years we have been trying to change the Cuban government, the Cuban regime," Dr. Hernandez says. "At the present time, what we have to do is change the emphasis to the Cuban people -- because they are going to be the ones who change things in Cuba."
The sudden shift in tactics marks a watershed in U.S.-Cuban relations.
Cuba, like no other state, has stuck in the craw of U. S. foreign policy -- with its leader, Fidel Castro, the target of numerous assassination attempts, one failed invasion, countless exile sabotage plots and an economic embargo that has outlasted 10 U. S. presidents.
