To other soldiers uncle Freddy was known as Company Sgt. Maj. Frederick William Hall, who hailed from Winnipeg. He died April 24, 1915, while attempting to save a wounded compatriot during the Second Battle of Ypres in Belgium.
Laying low in the trenches under darkness, Hall heard wounded soldiers nearby and brought two of them back to safety.
He was killed attempting to rescue a third, shot in the head by enemy fire.
Hall's actions that day earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration awarded for valour "in the face of the enemy."
And on Monday - the first day of Remembrance Week - Heritage Minister James Moore unveiled a new display at the Canadian War Museum containing Hall's medal and those of two others who grew up on the same Winnipeg street - Lieut. Robert Shankland and Cpl. Lionel Clarke.
"Their stories are public stories," Moore told QMI Agency. "They need to be told."
It isn't known whether the three men knew each other prior to the war, but in 1923 Pine Street was renamed Valour Road in their honour. They have since then been referred to as the Boys of Valour Road.
"The medal always meant a great deal to our family," Cargo said. "Uncle Freddy's story was one of the first I ever heard and I think it's appropriate to pass it to the museum and give it a proper home."
The Victoria Cross medals are now part of a permanent collection and the exhibit will tour Canada over the next few years.

TORONTO - To honour Canadians who served during two world wars, the Korean War and on more recent peacekeeping missions, on Sunday doff your hat, stop work, pull your vehicle to the roadside, and glimpse into the past at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
At 11 a.m., all TTC vehicles will pause for two minutes.
There are also special events in Toronto at which you can celebrate Remembrance Day, including:

The Daily Princetonian reports that 157 members of Princeton University’s faculty or staff have donated to the two presidential candidates. One hundred fifty-five donated to Obama; two donated to Romney. The two who donated to Romney were a visiting lecturer in engineering and a janitor.A psychology professor told the paper that “professors in general are engaged in creating knowledge, so you have to be open to uncertainty and open to things being complicated.” She also said, in the paper’s words, that “there is even research that the speeches of liberal politicians are more cognitively complex.”
P.P.S. The psychology professor says that the speeches of liberal politicians are more cognitively complex. How about their ads? “Mitt Romney: Not one of us.” It seems to me there is nothing cognitively complex about Barack Obama in this election. His appeal has been, “Don’t vote for the rich guy who’ll give your wife cancer, ship your job overseas, favor his billionaire friends, rape the environment, cancel the federal government, and put y’all back in chains.” (There’s a touch of Biden in there too, true — the wonderfully cognitively complex Biden.)

I envision this to the scenerio where the family brings home the new puppy and everyone gets caught up in the excitement of the event but the next day someone has to start cleaning up "the accidents," pickup the dumps, pay food and vet bills...
In Maryland, Maine, Washington State and Colorado, Canadian-ness is spreading like a bad rash. The first three jurisdictions approved same-sex marriage by plebiscite. The latter two have legalized recreational marijuana.
Anyone who’s ever danced with a wolf or gotten sick from a blanket knows that Regular Americans would be nowhere without the cultural contributions of Native Americans.
Paving the way for European settlers…well, keeping the seat warm for European settlers…Native Americans gave this country inventions and ideas without which we would live as trolls. We can thank the Mexican for the delicious spice of a chimichanga, but we must further thank Geronimo’s Chosen for the microwave that cooked it. Now that the long-standing argument over whether or not horses can be “invented” has been put to rest, let us sit a spell ’round the campfire and look into some other fine Native American accomplishments, though the descriptions may be rife with the White Man’s “quotation” “marks.” DREAMCATCHERS

Allow me to proffer a slice of Native American wisdom. Not sure which way to go on long-term financial investments? Eat poison and talk to an owl! While the exact nature of this breakthrough is kept arcane, the gist, as I understand it, is this: Men of a certain age can become “confused” over the troubles of “adulthood,” and this confusion is alleviated by eating cactus that makes them insane. During an unbearably lengthy period of hallucination, animals (real or imagined) will speak with them and one will explain that it and the young man are essentially the same dude. Following this, life’s little troubles are viewed with reason and clarity, which explains the unwavering day-to-day focus unique to the Native American. While the White Man disgracefully tossed away such useful items as buffalo molars, buffalo spleens, buffalo eyelids, and buffalo noses, so it is told that the Native American, nomadic or not and regardless of tribe, made use of every bit of a slain buffalo. Buffalo hair was woven into handsome scarves, and did ya know that the wholesome game of ping-pong began with buffalo eyes and bare hands? Well, it did. Buffalo ankles were used as both a weapon and a marital aid, and buffalo tonsils are widely regarded as the world’s first stress-relief ball. There is a lesson in this. Among the many dynamic traditions of the Native American, long, lustrous hair on men is…ahem…”chief” among them. This hair (the fourth food group, as it happens) probably didn’t collect buffalo eyelids, as they no doubt were used for some effective purpose, but did collect dust from the land upon which the Native American is so fond of sleeping. Eschewing such eurocentric concepts as a “hat,” a tight-knit rope of hair dually braided, later favored by such cultural luminaries as Pippi Longstocking and Strawberry Shortcake, kept dirt and dust from nestling in Native American man-hair. To this day the tradition continues and has been adopted by white men, some small percentage of whom are alleged to be straight. If bling is a concern, beads (money) can be introduced into the braids, as can bird parts.
I could go on like a rambling fable about the hundred or so more contributions Native Americans have selflessly given to Regular American culture, but I am tired and disinterested, so I should trail off to bed before I’m bored to tears.
The latest issue of the McGill Daily were treated to a commentary piece by a cultural studies major named Guillermo MartÃnez de Velasco (http://www.mcgilldaily.com/2012/10/you-are-racist/). His point was summed up neatly in the headline and subhead: "You are racist: Even if you think you're not." Racism, he instructed, "is a systematic essentialization of others' perceived cultural signifiers;" the concept of diversity is racist, too, he maintained, because it "wipes away the recognition of historical processes of oppression and domination." And so on.

Good Choice!
While Budget Chief Mike Del Grande warns of a looming fiscal crunch in 2014, as special funding for shelters, daycare, the homeless and welfare runs out, they've been busy restoring their office budgets to what they were back in the spendthrift days of the David Miller era.
Shortly after Mayor Rob Ford took office, councillors — many of whom had to be dragged kicking and screaming into restraint — voted to reduce their office budgets from $50,445 annually to $30,000.
But ever since, they've been working away at getting that money back.
As Sun City Hall columnist Sue-Ann Levy reported last week, due to motions quietly passed at council in July, councillors have managed to give back to themselves all but $100,000 of the $900,000 they originally saved.
The biggest bite, $650,000, will go towards 33 new or expanded constituency offices, plus newsletter distribution ($111,000), cellphone roaming charges ($10,000), and an inflationary increase to their $30,000 office budgets at an additional cost of $26,400.
In other words — and this applies to politicians on the left and right who voted in favour of boosting their budgets — these people still don't get it.
They still don't understand the concept of leading by example.
Meanwhile, Del Grande warns the city is facing a new $67-million hole in its operating budget for 2014 — in addition to its structural deficit.
That's because money it has been drawing from reserves to help pay for shelters and daycare spaces since amalgamation in 1998 is about to run out.
Looming changes in the way the province funds homeless and welfare programs, will put additional pressures on the budget.
And yet, such basic fiscal realities are lost on too many councillors, who, when they aren't feathering their own nests, are lobbying for the city to spend any savings Ford and his council allies manage to find, on their own pet projects.
Imagine what they'll do if Ford is defeated in the next election and replaced by a fiscally irresponsible mayor.
In addition, the mayor is only one vote on the 45-member council. On that point, Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday had some good advice for the public earlier this year after council voted to make it more difficult to contract out city services, part of the Ford administration's efforts to secure the best deals for taxpayers. "My advice to the taxpayer would be don¹t send us any more activists, don't send us any more unionists, don't send us any more cyclists," Holyday said. "Send us some people down here with good common sense who just want to manage the city's affairs, that's what's needed."
