What was point of landfill road trip?
Letter, March 5.
I cannot understand why reader David Miller from Keswick is dumping on Toronto Councillors Karen Stintz and Denzil Minnan-Wong for doing their job and trying to protect the interests of taxpayers. The real arrogance surrounding this situation is the wall of silence and veil of secrecy thrown up by Mayor David Miller.
By purchasing a landfill with a limited lifespan and refusing to consider clean, modern, incineration/energy-creation technology, the mayor keeps his head and taxpayer dollars stuck in the sand. All of the trucks hauling trash down Highway 401 will no doubt contribute more pollution to the environment than clean-burning incinerators.
Several communities around Toronto are already successfully using this technology, so why should Toronto be stuck in the past? As for the cost of the councillors' trip, it's peanuts compared to the nearly $3 million to expand the mayor's office.
