- Raphael Alexander: It's not our fault. We're victims

I often think that the main difference between a conservative and a liberal is in the belief that individuals should take personal responsibility for their own actions. A conservative believes in a punitive solution to theft, while a liberal believes in reforming the “root causes of socioeconomic inequalities” that led to the theft. A conservative believes reform of drug and alcohol addiction ultimately relies on the individual responsibility, while the liberal believes drugs and alcohol are a “disease” to be treated by public funds.
In the following article, while the failure of the Conservative program aimed at bringing in temporary workers into Canada is evident, the Liberal deflection from the illegal worker to the government is not an equal distribution of blame:
Foreigners in Canada on temporary work permits are being pushed into Toronto’s underground economy by the recession and a controversial federal program that leaves them vulnerable to abuse, a Star investigation has found.
They include people like Tony, a 29-year-old Honduran, who left his Alberta farm job after complaining of long hours and lower-than-promised wages. He rode a bus to Toronto in mid-September with two fellow Hondurans from the same farm. He now works illegally renovating homes, and his friends work illegally cleaning schools.
Do you understand that? It isn’t the illegal migrant violating the terms of his residency in Canada that is the problem; it is the federal government that leaves them “vulnerable to abuse”. It isn’t the illegal migrant choosing to work under the table, not contributing to a generous Canadian social security system; it is the federal government that pushes him to the black market.
