Ontario has 622 nursing homes. But it takes luck, patience, a lot of paperwork and a bit of stubbornness to get a frail elderly parent, spouse or companion into one before a crisis occurs.
What too often happens is that an ailing senior falls, has a stroke, or pushes his or her caregiver beyond the breaking point and lands in an emergency ward.
Once the hospital stabilizes him or her, the family is forced into a series of hasty decisions with inadequate information, little guidance and no control over the result.
