Galling opportunism
Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe is only one of several Opposition leaders attempting to make political hay from the latest deaths of our soldiers in Afghanistan.
But it is particularly galling to listen to this man, whose main quest is to tear our country apart, shoot from the lip on Canada's role in international affairs.
Duceppe obviously has doubts about Canada's mission of helping Afghans emerge from the tyrannical rule of the Taliban. It is a task which, if successful, would help drain a major ideological swamp that has bred the kind of fanaticism that led to the 9/11 attacks and has killed thousands worldwide.
Duceppe is suddenly so concerned about Canada's welfare, his party wants an emergency debate scheduled in the House of Commons -- tout de suite.
Canadians might be touched that Gilles really cares about us after all, if it weren't so glaringly apparent his concern is actually the worst kind of cynical opportunism.
Duceppe knows his political constituency -- Quebec, not Canada -- has historically opposed most of the wars in which this country has been embroiled.
And the Bloc Quebecois leader knows this could also serve as a useful wedge to lever back some of the support Stephen Harper and the Conservatives took from under his very feet in the last election.
Duceppe isn't alone in this.
Witness Jack Layton urging Canada to negotiate with the murderous, fanatical Taliban.
Layton knows most reasonable Canadians would never buy such an absurd notion, but it is the kind of touchy-feely nuttiness that appeals to loony-left voters, who are really the only ones Jack can count on to vote for his hapless party these days.
Several Liberal leadership candidates have also jumped all over the angst and sorrow being felt by Canadians at the latest round of deaths in Afghanistan.

Cut And Run, Cut And Run......
....but Doucette, Layton and some liberals don't realize there is no place to hide.
