On the solemn day that the bodies of five Canadian soldiers return home, Alexandre (Sacha) Trudeau boldly suggests these men have died for nothing.

"It's a crying shame," argues the late Pierre Trudeau's middle son. "Their sacrifices are in vain. Canadians are going to have to leave at one point and there's not going to be any trace (of what they have done). There's nothing we can do for that country right now."

In an interview at the Four Seasons, where he is drumming up publicity for his upcoming documentary for CTV, the slight, reserved filmmaker fixes you with piercing blue eyes and insists that our job in Afghanistan is done, that it is time to pull out before more lives are lost.

Let's be clear.....I anguish over the loss of lives and given a perfect world there would be no need for us to be in Afghanistan but the reality is that it is not a perfect world and our "leaders" made a committment and we have an obligation to meet that committment. Unless we decide to become isolationists and close our borders and minds more of our young men and women are going to die and they are sacrificing their lives for other young men and women who they don't even know.
