John Oakley: David Suzuki's math doesn't add up
| In war, as the saying goes, the first casualty is truth. The same could be said for ideological warfare, as in, the left versus Stephen Harper, where a self-serving agenda evidently gives you permission to play fast and loose with the facts. David Suzuki, speaking in Toronto this week accused the Conservative government of "hounding" him, maliciously targeting his venerable foundation for tax audits; payback, he says, for his unrelenting criticism of the Harperites handling of climate change. Suzuki alleges his foundation has been recently audited on three separate occasions. Even if we were to take the esteemed scientist at his word, there's one small detail, actually two, that present a problem. Sources with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) maintain the CRA cannot be directed by the government to audit any one individual or organization, and, still more revealing, organisations such as Suzuki's foundation can only be audited ONCE per year, which makes it hard to square the time line. Three audits David? Really? That would suggest a three year window, well before Stephen Harper usurped the mantle of power. You don't have to be a scientist to figure that out.
