I Have Always Believed The Same Thing.......

Time for Toronto to get angry

Column, July 19

During Mel Lastman's two terms as mayor of the amalgamated City of Toronto, he was heard to say that he hated tax increases. As a result, we, the citizens of Toronto, benefitted from a three-year tax freeze.

Even though inflation was causing costs to rise, tax rates were not increased even by the rate of inflation.

Hindsight is a great educator because if there had been tax rate increases during those three freeze years at the rate of inflation, and if successive years had compounded the revenues generated by those increases, there would not be the monumental cash crisis that is now facing us.

It's time to realize that Toronto is not a furniture store.

We are charged interest on our debt and we do have to make payments.
