By IAN ROBERTSON, SUN MEDIA Chinatown panhandlers and thieves are such a plague that private security guards are patrolling the busy Spadina area shopping district. A three-week pilot project, begun Thursday, targets beggars who "make your day very unpleasant, screaming abuse if you turn them down," Intelligarde Security president Ross McLeod said. Two uniformed guards with batons, handcuffs and radios, riding bikes and walking, will also oust loiterers outside stores and in malls. "We're focussed on the low-level disorder issues ... street activity ... that the police are just too busy to respond to," McLeod said. |
