While walking back to my car after last Saturday's anti-coalition rally at Queen's Park, I had a charming encounter with a coalition supporter. A small red car screeched to a halt on University Avenue, and a rather scruffy looking man leaned out the passenger window, waved a "Oui Coalition" sign around, and screamed at those leaving the rally, "You are FASCIST pigs! F***ing FASCIST pigs!" He then tore off, pursued by a chorus of comparable declarations from the fascist pigs he'd just goaded. This didn't seem to bother any of the anti-coalition protesters, most of whom seemed to share my bemusement at this somewhat salty display of free speech.

Coming up the street were several younger pro-coalition protesters. Composed and well dressed, they were young, probably university students. True Believers, no doubt. They also carried signs, that they kept discretely tucked under their arms, not hidden, per se, but certainly not thrust into the faces of the riled-up crowd exiting Queen's Park. I glanced at one of the signs, and saw emblazoned upon it, "I'm part of the 62% majority." And that pithy phrase, right there, does more to discredit the Liberals' alliance with the NDP and the Bloc more than any hysterical cry of "Coup!" or "Treason!" from an incensed right-winger ever could.
