Raphael Alexander: Lies, damn lies and Employment Insurance statistics

The fact is that “facts” have very little importance in politics. Perception, or "optics”, is of greater importance. The Liberal party wants to expand the Employment Insurance program to make more Canadians eligible for help during the recession, to the great reluctance of the federal government. The Conservatives have argued that the Liberals want to create a system of higher payroll taxes in “perpetuity” to pay for this. That led an editorial in the Toronto Star arguing that the Harper government is spinning an E.I. “fiction”, but as it turns out, it isn’t so much about who is telling the truth, but what facts are being manipulated to create the closest version to it.
