(Black Harvard professor Henry Gates was arrested breaking into his own house after he lost his key.)
The whole thing is a monstrous compound misunderstanding. Yes, the cop was doing his job. Yes, professor Gates didn’t help the situation by getting mouthy. Yes, the president --- to use his own term --- “racheted up” the problem by calling the police stupid.
Having said that, the incident throws some needed light on several problems...racial profiling. It definitely exists. Minorities. They sometimes do have a chip on their shoulder.
Fortunately nothing serious happened. Suppose officer James Crowley had pulled his gun and shot Professor Gates.
Obama, with his usual cool, suggests the three get to-gether over a beer at the White House.
Great idea. And a technique that yet might be brought to bear on even bigger problems in the ...
