The Ontario government wants to blame record deficits on recession, but their spending is the problem

f the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem, Ontarians should be concerned that its government has yet to come clean. Updated budget numbers presented by Finance Minister Dwight Duncan last week peg this year’s provincial deficit at $24.7-billion, with additional deficits of $21.1-billion and $19.4-billion forecast for the next two fiscal years (2010/11 and 2011/12).
Despite these significant deficits and the additional debt and interest payments they will require, all that has been offered up thus far is a promise to undergo a “strategic spending review” of all programs and services to look for potential efficiencies and to “engage Ontarians in an important conversation” about how to balance the budget.
What Ontario needs is a detailed plan to return to a balanced budget.
