- Matt Gurney: Obama needs to quit battling pipsqueaks
-
Just when I thought that politics on this continent couldn't get any more depressing, the Obama administration mercifully swooped in and gave me something else to focus on instead of the prolonged amateur hour currently masquerading as the Conservatives' second term in office. What could possibly be dumber than obliterating the nation's finances while simultaneously violating ethics laws? Getting into a food fight with a bombastic, immensely popular television host! Thanks, Washington. You've partially redeemed Ottawa in my eyes. Things actually could be worse.
As I wrote about a few weeks ago, Fox News host Glenn Beck has been bombarding President Obama with various and assorted criticisms. Beck is known for an over-the-top-style of delivery, frequently weeping on air and voicing his fears that very bad things are going to happen to America. He'd be really easy to dismiss as a crackpot, but for two things. He's got a large, growing audience eager to hear his take on the news, and some of his volleys have found their mark. Beck effectively destroyed White House Special Advisor Anthony "Van" Jones by exposing Jones' past association with communist groups and the 9-11 Truth movement. Jones fell on his sword and quit, but the incident was still a humiliation for the President. In recent days, Beck has trained his guns on Anita Dunn, the White House Communications Director, who told a bunch of kids last year that Mao Zedong was one of her favourite political philosophers. Whoops.
