Stephen Harper — still scary, after all these years.
The Winnipeg Free Press's Frances Russell reminds us why we almost never read the Winnipeg Free Press's Frances Russell. Honestly: Stephen Harper is a big, scary, bug-eyed evangelical Christian warmonger? What year is this? Still, it is somewhat fascinating to see it argued that Mr. Harper's “dyed-in-the-wool Republican” values lie behind both his conscious outreach to immigrant Canadians, “many of [whom] come from countries where fundamentalist religion, whether Muslim, Christian or Judaic, predominate,” and his “crackdown on refugees” — most of them Mexicans, who, last we checked, aren't particularly known for progressive politics.
The Calgary Herald's editorialists support Immigration Minister Jason Kenney's efforts to “play hardball” with the 76 suspected Tamils who arrived in B.C. on a rusted-out freighter — but we don't know what “hardball” even means in this context. It's not up to Mr. Kenney whether they stay or go. as As the Edmonton Journal's editorialists point out, those that claim refugee status are entitled to the same (interminable) due process as any other asylum-seekers, whether we like it or not.
