- Chris Selley: Pay your taxes and keep your mouth shut

Should Members of Parliament have to release detailed accounts of how they spent your money? No, say two Conservative MPs. Absolutely not. What are you, stupid?
Here's Gerald "Giant Novelty Cheque" Keddy:
"No," he said. "No way. No way. All [we'd be] doing is opening it up, giving the media an opportunity to find fault. "What we have is an overall budget. We are absolutely 100 per cent responsible for that budget. If we go over that budget, we pay out of our own pocket, and we have very, very good scrutiny."
Go on, you can trust him! And here's Gordon O'Connor:"Every year, the parliamentary accounts are audited by a respected outside audit firm. Every year. It would be next to impossible for something like [the British MP expenses row] to happen here. The controls . . . are so tight that I don’t think people could do much fiddling, if they tried fiddling."
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation tells the Chronicle-Herald's Steve Maher they're just accounting audits, not value-for-money audits ... but never mind. You can trust him! He's Gordon O'Connor!
