Dalton McGuinty’s government has done it again. In the wake of public outrage, scathing media commentary, and corporate push-back, the Ontario Liberals have executed yet another giant policy U-turn, this time, on their “EcoFee” project.
Said fee (not a “tax,” of course — just a “fee”) came into effect on July 1, the second stage in a plan to make manufacturers of “hazardous” products pay for their safe disposal. Manufacturers were free to pass on the fee to retailers, who could then pass it on to consumers. Different retailers charged different fees for sales of the same product; some indicated the fees on the bill, others did not. To top things off, the thousands of products suddenly subject to the Eco Fee included pharmaceuticals, glue, and even biodegradable soap, which did not require safe disposal at all.
