As Kenneth Mungara crossed the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon finish line Sunday, he clasped his hands and offered a prayer of thanks. It was the third time the Kenyan outpaced runners in the annual event. And he covered the 42.1-kilometre course in 2:07:57 hours — breaking his previous record, in 2009, by 34 seconds.
This year, Mungara had more than 20,000 participants behind him.
Officials said the 21st running of the marathon had its most successful year, raising more than $2.7 million for 127 local charities and setting several course records.
Highlights include:
• A dramatic final sprint won Sharon Cherop, also from Kenya, the women’s title, running one second ahead of Tirfi Tsegaye, of Ethiopia.
• Hamilton resident Reid Coolsaet, of the Speed River Track Club in Guelph, came 10th, with the fastest time ever by a Canadian on Canadian soil — in 2:11:22 hours, achieving the Canadian Olympic standard for the 2012 Games. His time eclipsed the mark of 2:11:34 previously set in 1995 by Peter Fonseca, Ontario’s labour minister.
— Half-Marathon Highlights
• Ed Whitlock, of Milton ran a world-record for 79-year-olds, finishing in 1:34:27 hours. He holds the world-record for the fastest marathon in the 70-plus category, set in 2004.
• Dagim Yeshitela, of Mississauga, won the men’s half-marathon in 1:03:24 hours.
