Today’s letters: Give the status quo a chance


Re: Slaves To The Status Quo, Leon Wieseltier, May 20.

For the second time in as many weeks, a columnist in the Post is claiming that Benjamin Netanyahu has done nothing to advance the peace process. Leon Wieseltier asserts that Mr. Netanyahu “refused to accede to the American request that he put a stop to the settlements.” But he did. Mr. Netanyahu imposed a 10-month moratorium on settlement building, despite protests from his political base. By refusing to come to the table until the final month, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas made it impossible for Mr. Netanyahu to renew the moratorium. Mr. Netanyahu may have his faults, but he should be recognized for his genuine attempts at peace. Stephen Tannenbaum, Thornhill, Ont.
