Barbara Kay: Alice Walker and Gaza, a hypocrite on an hypocritical mission
Acclaimed novelist Alice Walker, author of The Colour Purple amongst many other successful works, is a participant in the flotilla that will attempt to break Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza.
Like all the other hypocrites on board the ten ships in the convoy, she is justifying her actions on the grounds that Gaza is desperately short of necessities and requires humanitarian aid – not true, nobody in Gaza is going hungry, and many people in Gaza are waxing more prosperous by the day – and that there is no other way to get humanitarian aid to Gaza except directly – also not true, since Israel is perfectly willing to receive their supplies through an Israeli port, where triage can be done to separate innocent goods from possible arms, and transfer them to Gaza.
