The start of leftwing social in-activists venturing from their parent's basement...
May Day cry a false alarm
QMI AGENCYAlso known as May Day, held annually on May 1, it was founded in the 19th century by communists meeting in Paris for the Second International.
Back then it was about hardcore socialism and communism. It's since turned into a grab bag of grievances for all sorts of people.
Workers are right to be enraged by the corruption, cronyism and general lack of democracy that happens in some countries.
In Turkey, protesters objected to the Erdogan government which has tried to shut down social media, allegedly tried to purge judges and police investigating government corruption and halted transit to block protesters from congregating.
That certainly sounds worthy of taking to the barricades. But in cushy, luxurious, indebted-to-the-eyeballs North America?
Here's how even Russia's state RT network describes the Washington version: "According to a rally participant, its purpose was to advocate 'tearing down' the current economic and social system." Hey folks, Obama's already working on it. Just give the man some space.
In Seattle the banners included slogans "Die Yuppie Scum" and "Anti-Capitalism and Anti-State." Suffice to say, there were a few arrests once the sun went down.
The marchers wanted a $15 minimum wage. The mayor actually announced early in the day that he'd implement it - over seven years. So they protested that they weren't getting it immediately.
At Toronto's Allan Gardens protesters gathered to, as their website notes, "fight against poverty and capitalism." Even though Canada, and Toronto in particular, affords an extensive menu of free or subsidized services to those either in need or those who just can't be bothered.
"Do you support capitalism as a system?" Sun News' Marissa Semkiw asked one attendee on camera.
"Hell no." What did he prefer? "Communism." Another protester complained: "We can eliminate poverty but this government doesn't want to eliminate poverty, it wants to make people at the top rich." True, there's too much cronyism. But the answer is to stop protesting and start a business - create jobs! It's working for the poor in China and India.
WHILE MANY OF THOSE OF US WHO PAY THE FREIGHT FOR THESE SOCIAL IN-ACTIVISTS...
