s we prepare to take stock of all that we have to be thankful for this Thanksgiving weekend, most of us are likely to conclude that although in material terms we may be worse off than we were two Octobers ago, many of our stocks having since turned into turkeys, we are nevertheless blessed in many, many ways.
The customary use of the passive voice — “are blessed” — is interesting: Many of us, even the irreligious, feel we owe our well-being to a Force, or Forces, larger than ourselves, be it Providence, Fate, Fortune, or What Have You. To a great extent, we probably do.

Bob Rae is the MP for Rosedale, the wealthy downtown Toronto enclave where the average family income is close to $150,000.
The Washington Post reported that Bill Clinton earned US$31 million between 2001 and 2005 in speaking fees. Clinton earned $775,000 for delivering two speeches in Toronto in 2005, almost as much as he was paid for his eight years as President. According to CNN Clinton charges $300,000 to $350,000 to address anyone who can afford it, though he also does a lot of free speaking and charitable fundraising as well.
And Canwest's Randy Boswell reports that Tony Blair, the former Labour Party prime minister who won three majority governments in Britain, charges north of $175,000 a speech, and has hit on the idea of charging an additional fee for posing with the rabble:
