John Ivison: Canada walks a fine line on Cuba
Posted: May 28, 2009, 6:19 PM by NP Editor

Peter Kent has spent much of the past six months in places like Bogota, Port of Spain and San Salvador but he’s not yet been our man in Havana.

The newly-minted Minister of State for the Americas’ recent visit to the Cuban capital was cancelled after he angered the Castro regime by meeting with a political dissident.

But the former TV news journalist may yet find himself persona grata in Havana, depending on how he handles a tricky diplomatic mission next week in Honduras - the re-integration of Cuba into the family of American states.

Mr. Kent is scheduled to attend the General Assembly of the Organization of American States in San Pedro Sula next Tuesday. The hot ticket on the agenda is a move by a number of Latin American countries to have the suspension of Cuba’s OAS membership lifted - a proposal that threatens to cause Mr. Kent no end of headaches as he attempts to extend Canada’s influence in the Western Hemisphere.

Latest round of attack ads not welcome

Re:Tory ads attack Ignatieff as`elitist,' May 14

The latest attack ads on Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff by the federal Conservatives show once again how totally bereft of ideas and political solutions to serious issues the right wing has become. The sad story is that some Canadians are actually influenced by these tactics.

Isn't it time that Harperites drop the personal attacks on their political opponents (whom they see as enemies) and address the real problems of the nation? This arrogance from the right is seen in no other political group in Canada.

When threatened by ideas, they resort to sucker punching opponents just like schoolyard bullies. We know how much good these tactics did George W. Bush and his bunch of rednecks.

Let's just hope that the Canadian public is as smart. Time to end this sort of political postering and get down to the real business of working for this country.

Stephen L. Bloom, Toronto

Why are ads making personal attacks against individuals even allowed in the public media? There is no election afoot and, even if there were, the kind of nasty, smarmy, self-serving attacks against Michael Ignatieff are uncalled for and should not be permitted.

Joan Vastokas, Toronto

It is telling that, once again, there is yet another immature, derogatory TV ad distributed with schoolyard-style tactics by the embattled Conservative party. Not at all surprisingly, the signs of jealousy start to surface when forced to deal with an intelligent political newcomer who threatens to outshine and force accountability. These ongoing, financially wasteful Conservative ads speak volumes of the despiration of Stephen Harper's struggle to keep power, while yet again providing sniping but no solutions.

I, for one, welcome Michael Ignatieff's well-educated views and impressive curriculum vitae as we face the tough challenges of today.

Yvonne Ferlatte Locke, Toronto

The new Conservative ads brand Michael Ignatieff as an Uncle-Sam-loving user of attack ads who is emotionally detached and arrogant. Got it. And all of this is, of course, in sharp contrast to that party leader on the other side of the aisle – a non-Uncle-Sam-loving non-user of attack ads who has deep emotional affection for the public and is a paragon of humility.

Thomas Mulligan, Grimsby

A thinking Canadian is compelled to ask just how deep the Tories can sink before they destroy the decency that is supposed to be the hallmark of civilized citizenship. Canada is worthy of better than that.

Seija Paddon, Mississauga

Does this mean the "poopin' puffin" will give way to an "excreting eider"?
