Continuing Saga About Success Of Incineration

The most dangerous waste
By SUE-ANN LEVY

TURIN, Italy -- On the outskirts of the city that hosted the 2006 Winter Olympic games, some of Italy's most hazardous industrial waste is being treated like gold.

At Servizi Industriali -- the largest plant of its kind in the country (there are three other smaller operations) -- toxic materials are decontaminated through state-of-the-art chemical or biological processes before being sent either to special landfills or incinerators catering strictly to industrial waste.

"We treat the materials before they go to final disposal," says Cesarina Ferruzzi, spokeswoman for Servizi Industriali, which is a subsidiary of the privately-owned Green Holding Group, first established as a small company in 1978 and worth about 50-million Euros ($80 million Cdn.) today.
