Miller leaves NDP, shifts to neutral

The key point in your article was when Mayor David Miller said his decision to leave the NDP does not mean he will be rejecting NDP philosophy. Paraphrasing an often-heard line: If he talks like a free-spending democratic socialist and acts like a free-spending democratic socialist and thinks like a free-spending democratic socialist, he is a free-spending democratic socialist, no matter what he calls himself.

What was particularly telling was Miller's use of the traditional left-leaning politician's tactic when there are accusations of mismanagement. He says, "If you mean close libraries and swimming pools, I don't agree with that," knowing full well that most people will back off at that point and that he couldn't get away with it even if he tried.

People aren't saying the city should get its house in order by cutting services like libraries and pools or anything else that's necessary and justified. What they are saying is: Prove to us you're spending our money wisely and getting the most value from it that you can and that you've done a thorough review to justify the expenditures (i.e., a zero-based budgeting exercise or a value-for-money study by external experts).

If Miller can answer these questions and demonstrate value for money, let him go ahead and spend. In the meantime, justify the 21.2 per cent increase in spending over four years on "core municipal services."
