Cops Reveal 2-Hour Subway Crime Spree

Friday March 7, 2008

They boarded the subway at its busiest time and despite the crowds, they're accused of terrorizing the commuters who came in contact with them. Toronto Police have arrested four youngsters and are looking for six more, after a gang of youths allegedly went on a robbery spree in the city's subway system.

Cops began to receive a string of calls during Wednesday afternoon's rush home, all with the same complaint. Passengers told authorities they'd been accosted on the platform or the stairwells at stations along the Yonge-University and Bloor-Danforth lines, swarmed by at least ten young people all wearing red and black clothing. All were estimated to be about 15 years old.

They stole their Metropasses, wallets, iPods and jewelry. Some commuters were elbowed, others hit in the face to ensure their compliance.

The culprits then disappeared into the bowels of the system, grabbing a train and heading towards their next destination - and their next targets. The spree continued from about 4-6pm. Cops got a description from many of the victims and then they got a break, spotting four suspects who matched the witness accounts.

A quartet was picked up at Christie Station and taken in for questioning. Police have yet to find the rest of the alleged gang and are still hunting for them. In the meantime, they're asking those travelling underground to be aware of who's around them and to stand in designated waiting areas - where they can be seen by TTC personnel - in case those still on the loose decide to come back and try again.

If you know anything about these crimes, call 14 Division at (416) 808-1404.
