.....will hold off on the accolades until I see some positive results. Closing 4 booze cans is great but the question is why were they allowed to open in the first place?
Task force targets 'problem locations'
A group of city councillors is striking a task force to rid the city of "problem addresses and locations" that cater to criminals.
Earlier this week, at a meeting of the Etobicoke York community council, Councillors Cesar Palacio, Giorgio Mammoliti, Frances Nunziata, Frank Di Giorgio and Bill Saundercook voted unanimously to create the West-Toronto Crime Task Force.
The creation of the group falls on the heels of work Mammoliti has been doing in his North York Ward 7 to shut down alleged "booze cans" that cater to gang members.
4 SPEAKEASIES CLOSED
So far this summer, four such establishments have been shut down in the Jane St.-Finch Ave. area, according to Mammoliti.
The task force will include representatives from the police, parking authority, the provincial Alcohol and Gaming Commission, municipal licensing and standards and the Toronto fire department.
Participants will be asked to report monthly on progress they've made with identified addresses or locations, specifically those "where crime is known or is suspected to be taking place," according to the motion passed this week.
'SAFE AND CLEAN'
The public and local business improvement areas will also be asked for help.
"We are taking back our neighbourhoods. We are taking back our public lanes, our parks, parkettes, and restoring them to what they should be," said Palacio, the task force's co-chairman. "They should be safe and clean."
"This battle isn't going to be fought by one person," said Mammoliti, who sees the task force as an extension of his crusade this summer.
"It requires a concerted effort amongst a number of my colleagues and the bureaucracy to put a dent into this thing."
