Re "'Very troubling times'" (Oct. 9): How stupid does Dalton McGuinty think Ontarians are by staging this photo op of calling a debate? He has almost denied trouble was happening in this fine province and sat on his hands for months, ignoring the fact that thousands of jobs have vanished. Now he calls for a debate on the economic hardships we are facing. The Academy Award goes to Dalton for his portrayal of man who lets on he cares. If there wasn't an election going on at the federal level, he would be still steering the ship as he has been -- with his head stuck in the sand.

Re "Leadership lacking on economy" (Editorial, Oct. 5): You listed several companies where manufacturing jobs were lost. How many of the jobs lost were held by unionized employees? Could it be that the unions' continued demands for more money, more benefits, etc., without an increase in productivity, raised the cost of the end products beyond what the market could accept? And housing prices fell 3% from a year ago in Toronto. Is this the economy, or could David Miller's additional land transfer tax have something to do with it? Neither example reflects a lack of leadership, at least at the federal level.
