U.S. leader of gun ring into Canada gets 32 years

Updated Fri. Apr. 24 2009 1:56 PM ET The Associated Press

DETROIT -- U.S. officials say they have smashed a ring that smuggled firearms from the United States into Canada.

The U.S. attorney's office in Detroit says the ring's admitted leader, 33-year-old Riccardo Tolliver of Cincinnati, was sentenced Thursday to 32 years in prison.

Tolliver pleaded guilty Jan. 9 to seven firearms and narcotics counts before U.S. District Judge George Caram Steeh in Detroit.

Nine other people also have been convicted and sentenced in the case.

Edward Wishnow, Tolliver's lawyer, told the Detroit News that he feels the sentence his client received under a plea deal was unusually harsh.

But Wishnow concedes the judge's hands were tied by sentencing laws in drug-trafficking crimes involving firearms.
