Obama, the one-term wonder

Watching Barack Obama speak from the Oval Office Tuesday evening, I was reminded of a remark he made back in January: “I’d rather be a really good one-term president than a mediocre two-term president.” At the moment, he is on track to be neither, but I have often wondered just what he meant.

U.S. President Barack Obama used his first televised speech from the Oval Office Tuesday to insist he had the Gulf spill crisis under control, or at least that he would get it under control and would ensure the U.S. Gulf Coast would be returned to it’s pre-spill condition.
It seemed to me a vacuous speech, but then most of Mr. Obama’s speeches seem devoid of meaningful content. There are always plenty of platitudes and high-minded sentiments but almost never any sense of how he will translate his words into action. He suffers from the kind of magical or wishful thinking that deludes so many on the liberal-left: Merely saying something, merely wishing for it fervently enough will make it so.
