My latest column took a lighthearted look at honorary doctorates and included several instances in which they have become a magnet for any number of aggrieved politicized filings. Canada has seen its fair share of controversy in such matters (see under Henry Morgentaler, UWO and Somerville, Ryerson). This month’s University of Nipissing’s honorary doctorate to former Ontario premier Mike Harris for his contributions to politics and business has certified him as a member of that special club.
You read all about it in these pages yesterday in Matt Gurney’s blistering rebuke to the Ontario Teachers’ Federation (OTF) and the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO). With hostility rivaling al Qaeda’s grudge against crusader Richard the Lionheart, both are still brooding over Harris’ failure to genuflect to their union demands while he was premier (1995-2002). They couldn’t stand the thought of someone they really, really hate receiving any recognition for anything – even for objective, irrefutable accomplishments that have nothing to do with their own grievances.
