Rae ignores history of neglect
Great Canadian explorer Bob Rae journeys up to the deep north of Ontario over the weekend and discovers a Native community called Attawapiskat living in squalor on the shores of a mammoth bay named James.

The "enlightened" Bob Rae has pressed the flesh up north. And what did he conclude? That more dependency and continued no accountability is what the people of Attawapiskat need. What a cynical, uncaring man he is.

Today’s letters: What was Bob Rae thinking?

1) Continuing to undermine Iggy as "leader" of the liberal party.
2) Trying to gloss over his massive failure as "leader" of the Ontario NDP and Premier of Ontario.


Re: Speaking Up For Our Economic Interests Abroad, letter to the editor, Jan. 13.

One of the low-lights of my career as a trade commissioner with the Department of Foreign Affairs occurred in the early 1990s. As the trade commissioner responsible for trade development with China, I was tasked in Canada with an incoming mission, led by the vice-governor of an important, leading industrial hi-tech province.

At the time, all Canadian provincial trade departments were eager to expand trade with China and responded to the incoming mission by lining up key business and government meetings. The federal government’s policy at the time was not to isolate China for its human rights policies, post-Tiananmen, but to use trade as a device to address those issues. Provincial governments accepted this policy and responded accordingly.

Except for the Rae government in Ontario. Not only did the Ontario minister responsible for trade refuse to meet with any Chinese government representative, but bureaucrats in his department refused to co-operate.

Post-Tiananmen, I met regularly with Canadian business leaders, particularly those in the Chinese/Canadian community in Toronto, to assure them that we would not isolate China but would continue to foster our mutually beneficial trade ties, despite the Rae government’s attitude to the contrary.

If the UAE is so eager to fight violent extremism, as claimed by Mr. Rae, why are UAE ports crammed with vessels from Iran, as noted during U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s current visit to the Gulf States? Some Canadian ambassador, eh?

Good on Bob Rae, though in this piece he only hints at a continuing role, i.e. non-combat training in the Kabul area, for the CF post-2011.  Will the prime minister be willing to take up and run with what is clearly more than a hint?  Note that Mr Rae writes in the Toronto Star, for maximum effect amongst Liberals:

The news over the past few days has been Liberal-NDP merger. This is all talk and serves to undermine Michael Ignatieff as leader of the Liberal Party. Over the past month, there’s been renewed talk of coalition between the Liberals and NDP and this was spurred on by a couple of polls indicating that a Michael Ignatieff led coalition would lose to Stephen Harper, a Bob Rae led one would tie and — just for fun — a Jack Layton led coalition would win. Another poll was released to suggest that a majority of Canadians would support a coalition party against the Conservatives (you gotta love those leaderless ideal-leader poll questions!)
The problem is, however, is that the electorate wouldn’t be asked as they were by their friendly dinner-time-calling pollster friends. Michael Ignatieff has explicitly said (at least in his latest iteration) that he would not run as a coalition during the next election and that the numbers post-election would govern his choice.

Ok. Maybe that's a stretch, but not by much.
But Liberal Bob Rae thinks that money we give nations should not hold a caveat that lets us impose our ideology on those countries. He said exactly just that when addressing the decision by our government to not allow our foreign aid to be used to pay for abortions.

Liberal MP Bob Rae told reporters in Ottawa the Federal Government is trying to impose its moral agenda on other countries, adding “Canada is now taking an ideological position and, frankly, I think they’ve raised something which could well have been avoided in the effort to create a stronger international consensus.”

So where does Liberal Bob Rae draw the line? Ideology has a very broad description.
If we decided to give foreign aid to Lebanon would he be ok with them using that money to buy bombs and drop those bombs on Israel? THAT is ideology.
If we decided to give money to a Afghanistan, would he be ok with them using that money to buy acid to throw in the face of women who do not wear a burka? THAT is ideology.
If we decided to give foreign aid to Afghanistan, would he be ok with them using that money to grow Opium and sell it for import into Canada? THAT is ideology.
If we decided to give foreign aid to China....oh wait we DO give foreign aid to China....would he be ok if they took that money and ran over student protesters with tanks in Tiananmen Square? THAT is ideology.

I Wil Have 1 Dozen Potato With Cheddar Cheese And 1 Dozen With Fried Onions...

...at no time during the past couple of months was I prevented from buying my preferred choice of perogies.

Hey, I am one Canadian who is really happy that Harper allowed the Olympics to monopolize our TV screens for two weeks. What a great games, and no distractions from our politicians. Canada has had a very good two weeks! Some of the stories coming out of the Olympics have been just fantastic. Have we ever felt so good as a country???Thank you, Stephen Harper!
