Of Course It Is Shocking But......

....let's keep in mind that 75% of those in the target groups have been receiving their basic rights and let's look at the Toronto Housing Corp.'s track record.

Discrimination toward renters 'shocking'

Toronto landlords are denying basic rights to thousands, with the mentally ill and single black parents the worst hit, a study by the Centre for Equality Rights in Accommodation has found.

There Is Enough Blame To Go Around

The banks and financial institutions are a good target but I don't hear anything from the automakers and their unions about taking cuts in salary and perks.....

    So let's get this straight.

To help out our banks in the ongoing economic crisis, Canadians, through our federal government, are buying up to $75 billion in mortgages they hold and guaranteeing up to $218 billion of commercial debt.

And the thanks we get is that the banks are STILL jacking up their usurious interest rates on credit cards?

What ever happened to the old "give and take" between neighbours who help each other out in tough times?

Isn't "give and take" one of those nice, family values Prime Minister Stephen Harper used to talk about when he was wearing his blue sweater?

Ditto Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, absent the sweater.

So, how come with our banks it's always we give and they take?

NDP Leader Jack Layton makes a valid point when he asks what are we getting in return from the banks for the billions of dollars we just put up to help them?

We can think of a slew of outrageous credit card interest rates and ATM and other service fees the banks should be required to lower in return.

Was any of this discussed while our self-styled public and private sector masters of the universe were crafting these deals?

Sure, the goal is to free up credit, which will help out consumers and the economy in the long run.

And granted, assuming the Canadian housing market doesn't tank the way the American one has, taxpayers could make a profit over the long term.

But let's not pretend there isn't a potential downside. There's always risk when you invest in real estate or backstop debt.

Ask anyone who still remembers when the TSX hit 15,000 in May.

As for Layton, sure he's a chronic bank-basher and a socialist, but isn't government intervention in the banking sector on this scale sort of ... um ... socialist, anyway?

So how about having Harper and Flaherty lean on the banks to demonstrate a little "Solidarity Forever" -- with us -- for a change?

    The CAW must give ground

    Residential School Reality

Not everyone connected with residential schools was a pervert.........and you have to wonder why we don't hear more about the treatment of students in private residential schools.

    June 2, 2008

    Truth And Antirevisionism

    Rodney A. Clifton;

As a young student, Mr. Ignatieff attended Toronto’s Upper Canada College, arguably the top private “residential school” in the country. At the time, he probably did not know that employees of other Canadian residential schools received little pay and many sleepless nights for their labour. But, as an intellectual and as an MP, he should have searched harder for the available evidence. In Stringer Hall, for example, I was responsible for 85 senior boys between the ages of 12 and 21 for 22 hours a day, six days a week. The work was difficult, even for a strong 21-year-old.

Yet today, the reward for former residential school employees is denigration in the national press by people such as Mr. Ignatieff — and, more surprisingly, by the churches they served. I pray that the Commission will hear a variety of perspectives.

Unfortunately, I do not think this will happen because of the hostile climate that now exists. Few former school employees — both non-aboriginal and aboriginal — will acknowledge that they worked in residential schools, and even fewer will appear before the Commission. They already know that the “truth” has been pre-determined, and that “reconciliation” means financial compensation, which is already being distributed in any event. Few people will praise the residential schools — their administrators, their teachers or their supervisors. Fewer still will dare publicly admit that their residential-school experiences were positive.

    Don't Hold Your Breath Marni.......

Marni Soupcoff on Al Gore and Czech President Vaclav Klaus: There's a debate I'd like to see

Czech President Vaclav Klaus says he's ready to debate former U.S. vice president Al Gore about global warming. That's a verbal sparring contest I'd like to see. Klaus does a very good job of articulating the skewed priorities that many environmentalists embrace (Earth first, humans and liberty second):

Klaus, an economist, said he opposed the "climate alarmism" perpetuated by environmentalism trying to impose their ideals, comparing it to the decades of communist rule he experienced growing up in Soviet-dominated Czechoslovakia. "Like their (communist) predecessors, they will be certain that they have the right to sacrifice man and his freedom to make their idea reality," he said. "In the past, it was in the name of the Marxists or of the proletariat — this time, in the name of the planet," he added.

So, when's the smackdown? And where can I go to put my money on Klaus?

Let's Not Lose Sight Of A Couple Of Things

    * the violence and criminal activity is being perpetrated by a very small group in the community.
    * the majority of the community still needs to bear the shame and guilt because of their reluctance/fear to co-operate with the police.
    * the judicial system is a failure. The police do their job and the cretins are out on the street before the ink is dry on the booking sheets. The police are hampered by politicos who continually have them under a microscope and use the race card.
    * The media and community need to do more to highlight the successes within the community.

Sirens screamed to the Dundas and Broadview area at about 8pm Thursday for reports of a double stabbing. One man was knifed in the stomach while another suffered wounds to his side.

Police say two men who'd been drinking heavily were jumped while walking on Boulton Ave. One man didn't even know he was wounded until it was pointed out by police. Both men were treated at St. Michael's Hospital and are expected to recover.

It's not clear exactly what happened. Cops say both men aren't cooperating with their probe.

    Mar 21, 2008 04:30 AM

    Staff Reporters

A 23-year-old man was rushed to hospital in critical condition yesterday after he was shot while sitting in his car with his young daughter at a plaza in the city's east end.

The shooting happened around 7 p.m., near Markham Rd. and Lawrence Ave. E., in the Terrace Brae Plaza near a Bank of Montreal, police said. Customers waiting in line at the bank ATM nearby heard a scream and several gunshots.

EMS officer Dave Viljak said the victim was struck in the left upper chest. "He's been taken to the trauma centre at Sunnybrook hospital," he said.

The plaza went into lockdown as investigators spoke with witnesses. Sgt. Kevin Murrell of 43 Division said he is hopeful they will help piece together what happened.

Murrell added that as of last night the victim was still clinging to life. "We don't know if he'll live or not," he said. "He's undergoing surgery."

A suspect described as 23 to 25 years old with dreadlocks was seen fleeing the bank in a burgundy or red van.

    Toronto K9 unit nabs carjackers

    Mar 21, 2008 06:55 AM

The Toronto police K9 unit made do without its dogs Friday morning, arresting two men after spotting a car wanted in a carjacking in the city’s north end.

Around 1 a.m., a young man and woman called police to say two men had approached them, stolen their wallet and purse, and taken off in the victims’ Honda CRV, Staff Sgt. Steve Tutchener said.

One of the carjackers was armed with a gun, police were told. The victims were left uninjured on Patricia Ave., south of Steeles Ave. near Yonge St.

Police began looking for the Honda CRV, but the K9 unit spotted it soon after on a nearby road and gave chase. The two men inside the car crashed it into a curb near the Silver City movie theatres at Yorkdale Mall, abandoned it and fled.

The K9 unit, already on scene, quickly tracked down two men. They were arrested and a gun was recovered.

“Luck was on our side tonight,” Tutchener said.

Police have not released names or charges.

In today’s Posted Toronto Blog, Barry Hertz rants about the latest Toronto shooting “tragedy” - the gangland execution-style bullet hail that took place in Lawrence Park last late last week - and blames everyone and everything except the little putz who pulled the trigger.
