We are turning into a nation of bag ladies and schleppers and we have the "green revolution" to blame. Look around any busy urban street in this country and you will see oppressed legions lugging cloth -- read "environmentally friendly" -- bags filled with God knows what at any time of the day and in any setting.

The original point of these bags was to replace plastic bags. I understand that completely. I even own a few cloth bags. Five to be exact. I bring them to the grocery store, fill them up and drag them back to my car. From there it is into the house. And that is it. I do not carry these bags around with me all week in the event I happen to buy something. But others seem to be doing just that.

Have you noticed that when politicians, United Nations diplomats, environmental activists, radical scientists, journalists and even, lately, multinational corporations, talk about "going green" to save the planet, the only "green" they're talking about is the colour of our money?

Revenue Neutral?

I am not an economist or a chartered accountant so even if I had all the facts and figures, which I don't have, so I can't make a definitive statement on whether it will or will not be revenue neutral but I know that when I get my utility bills and make purchases I will be paying more up front out my decreasing disposable income and giving me back my money at income tax time doesn't put food on the table today.

Going To A Festival Doesn't Make You Green.....

.....unless you walked/biked, brought sustenance (water, snacks) in non plastic containers, left nothing at the site that had to be collected and disposed of, etc.

Will it be your money or your life?

If one thing is crystal clear in this month of so many festivals, great big parties and worldwide observations, it's that good intentions have a long way to go as a path to solving a global climate crisis.

The most stark evidence of this were the simultaneous occurrences of the air polluting Toronto Grand Prix -- rubber burning and cars shooting all kinds of proven poisonous emissions into the air -- and the worldwide mass gatherings of people at Live Earth green concerts with the message, "All we are saying is give Mother Earth a chance."

Well, it's a start, but just wanting something, really, really badly is the technique kids use when wishing for something for Christmas. How well and how often does that method work?

For those who like to take a positive approach, let's agree with the idea every little bit helps, no matter how small. And sure we can assuage our guilt by throwing our empty plastic water bottles into the recycling bins and switching to compact fluorescent bulbs. But what we need to get into our "new" way of thinking is that trying to do the old actions with some slight new twist is not really going to turn this behemoth around.

It's not recycling bottles and plastics that will really help, but not using them at all.
