The UN seems determined to never let a chance go by to make itself look ridiculous. The latest example is the election last week of Iran as a member of the Commission on the Status of Women, part of the UN’s economic and social council. Women are so overwhelmingly discriminated against in Iran that they'd have to make considerable progress just to claim second-rate status. As the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran pointed out, “women lack the ability to choose their husbands, have no independent right to education after marriage, no right to divorce, no right to child custody, have no protection from violent treatment in public spaces, are restricted by quotas for women’s admission at universities, and are arrested, beaten, and imprisoned for peacefully seeking change of such laws.”

At first glance, the headline looks like a joke — “Iran wins a seat on UN Commission on the Status of Women.” But this is no laughing matter. The country that sees women as second-class citizens and stones adulteresses to death has won a place by default on the world body’s commission charged with improving the lot of women around the world. Worse still, it acquired — I refuse to use the word “won” — the place by default, thanks to the UN’s bloc voting procedure. It’s the second time the mullahs have used manipulation of the rules to land a place on the commission. As a U.S. official told Fox News, “there is no opportunity [to object]. That is not how the procedure works.”

Over the centuries, the question has absorbed great minds. Milton’s Paradise Lost, written to “justify the ways of God to men,” is the example nonpareil: theodicy in 12 books and (glorious) iambic pentameter.
It’s an almost archaic inquiry these days, but if anything could revive the subject it might be the puzzling existence, in a putatively benign creation, of Pat Robertson, the egregious televangelist and sometime politico south of the border.
His organisation has raised millions of dollars for the developing world and provided an enormous number of university scholarships for inner-city youths. No matter; he’s easy to make fun of.

Do you oppose government- and mosque-supported anti-Semitic publications, radio, TV and textbooks?

Do you oppose the death penalty for non-Muslims and Muslims who convert to another religion?

Do you disagree with the quran which asserts the superiority of Islam to all other religions?
If you answered most or all of these affirmatively, you are a vile Islamophobe and deserve to be beheaded as the quran instructs.
If you answered one third or more of them affirmatively, you are a borderline Islamophobe and need to receive brainwashing to become a full-fledged dhimmi.
If you answered a quarter or fewer affirmatively, you need a few private lessons in dhimmitude to scrub yourself clean of those remnants of Islamophobia.
If you answered affirmatively to NONE of these, Congratulations! You are a worthy observant (radical–PC addition) Muslim and have a bright future vilifying Jews, torturing women or, inshallah, becoming a suicide bomber.”
