- I’m grateful to readers who go to the trouble of commenting on my commentary, whether in agreement or disagreement. Agreement builds self-confidence and disagreement builds self-doubt, both of which are necessities. Feedback is high-octane fuel for all, but opinion journalists are particularly thirsty engines. Without self-confidence we sputter to a halt and without self-doubt we run away with ourselves like so many Toyotas. Pundits without self-confidence tend to hedge their bets, cover their posteriors and put their readers to sleep. Pundits without self-doubt fare worse: They stick their necks out and get their heads chopped off. Been there, done that. That’s how I know.
