It sounds like Canadian Jews are just as Leftist as U.S. ones. Will Jews ever learn not to support authoritarianism in government? Was Hitler not a big enough lesson?
The B.C. Civil Liberties Association will be among a number of groups arguing this week that the Internet should be open to all kinds of speech, no matter how repugnant. Opposing that position is B'nai B'rith of Canada, which is adamant that hate speech must be kept off the Web.The two sides will argue their positions as interveners this week at a judicial review of a ruling that challenged the constitutionality of hate speech provisions of the Canadian Human Rights Act.The case arose after a human rights tribunal ruled that Marc Lemire, of Hamilton, Ont., had contravened the act by publishing an article on the Internet that was likely to expose homosexuals and blacks to hatred and contempt.But the tribunal didn't impose the hate speech provisions of the Canadian Human Rights Act, ruling they were unconstitutional.Richard Warman, an Ottawa lawyer, then complained, alleging Lemire had engaged in activities prohibited by the act, by communicating hate messages on several websites, and sought remedies. Those found to have engaged in the discriminatory practice "wilfully and recklessly" can be fined up to $20,000.Marvin Kurz, representing B'nai B'rith of Canada, said while his group would support some changes, such as removing the penalties, he believes the law is constitutional and the tribunal member misread it when determining Lemire's case."There are some forms of speech that are so bad that it's dangerous and harmful. It has to be the worst of the worst ... that we have to be protected from," Kurz said. "There's a real value in the way the law is now."

Universities And Freedom Of Expression...
...the Ultimate Oxymoron. Universities have allowed groups to hijack the administration and taken to the extreme the adage that shouting fire in a crowd is not allowed in their version of freedom of expression.

In the National Post, David Frum compares York University’s reception of right-wing academic Daniel Pipes (a briefing on hate speech, and an eventually cancelled appearance) to its reception of socialist former British MP George Galloway (a non-cancelled speech conducted under police protection paid for by students, with threats of legal action against protesters), and concludes there’s something rather wrong with this picture.
No kidding. Setting aside the fact the situations aren’t precisely analogous, and all the various allegations against Mr. Pipes and Mr. Galloway levelled by their ideological opponents, what we really don’t get is this: What kind of self-respecting university president wouldn’t bend over backwards, even if it costs him a few bucks, to ensure he presides over a bastion of absolute (or as absolute as possible) free speech? As Sun Media’s Ezra Levant says, they’re supposed to be in charge of educating young people. What the hell kind of message are they sending? (Mind you, as someone who applauded Mr. Galloway initially being kept out of Canada because he doesn’t like him — and because there was, technically speaking, a legal justification for doing so — Levant isn’t exactly dripping with credibility on this subject.)

Three protesters shut me down once; they won’t do it again

Two Fridays ago, I was driving in fog to give a talk about my new book, never dreaming I was about to join the list of those, most recently the American writer Ann Coulter and the former British MP George Galloway, who have been prevented from speaking at Canadian college campuses.
The difference, as Joe Brean wryly put it in a story in the National Post this week, is that where Ms. Coulter was shut down at the University of Ottawa by an unruly mob (which sufficiently alarmed authorities or her own security people that the event was cancelled), Mr. Galloway banned by the federal government (that decision overturned by a judge, with the result that Mr. Galloway was in Canada on a speaking tour this month), “Ms. Blatchford was shut down by three people and a couple of bike locks.”
I arrived late to the University of Waterloo to learn that the three, bike locks on their necks, were on the stage, behind the podium where I was to speak, chanting “Racist, racist, racist!”
We were all taken by surprise, I think – me, university spokesman Michael Strickland and a nice campus-police officer.
They asked what I’d like to do and I said I’d like to go on stage and give it a whirl, and that though I’d prefer the trio be removed first, I’d go on regardless. Nicola Makoway, the Doubleday/Random House publicist with me, asked if the police approved of that. The campus cop, who had called in a couple of cruisers from Waterloo Regional Police before I even got there, said no, because if things got rowdy, they wouldn’t be able to protect me.
Before I knew it, he had cancelled the event, and Nicola and I were back in the car, driving home to Toronto.
Now in the days since, I’ve been second-guessing myself all over the place: Should I have insisted on going on stage? Could I have? Should I have made a run through the curtains?
The reason, of course, is that there was something shameful about slinking away. To take liberties with a great line from the old movie Apocalypse Now, I hate the clank of bike lock in the evening; it sounds like defeat.
But I was an invited guest, not the boss of the university, and in those few minutes backstage, I deferred to those who worked for the school. It still feels like a mistake but I’m damned if I know what else I could have done.
The university brass appear to have felt the same way: President Feridun Hamdullahpur quickly phoned to apologize, I have been invited back and am going, and there it sits.
I think we were all mystified. I’m hardly a Coulter-esque stirrer of pots, but a reporter, and my book, which is about the ruination of the rule of law in Caledonia, Ont., during the native occupation there, is most sharply critical of the Ontario government and the senior ranks of the Ontario Provincial Police – that is, the state, which cheerfully threw the town under the bus.
I took pains in the book to explain what it is not about, and while I expected (and the university might have reasonably expected) there might be those who disagreed with that approach, it never occurred to me that anyone would try to stop me from speaking.
In fact, however, as I’ve only recently learned – publishers and their people tend to keep discouraging news from their authors, lest we crawl into the fetal position and stop typing – from the get-go, from the moment they began talking up Helpless: Caledonia’s Nightmare of Fear and Anarchy and How the Law Failed All of Us, they encountered what they call “pushback.”
Some bookstores were reluctant to host signings or events for fear of a native backlash; some news shows were less than keen to touch the subject for the same reason.
Their timidity seems to be all of a piece with what the U of W protesters said motivated them. As Dan Kellar, one of the three locked together on the stage, told Mr. Brean, I am a “settler” on native land who hasn’t come to term with settlers’ responsibilities and am therefore important to silence.
I take from that horse manure what I take from the booksellers’ reluctance: That if one doesn’t bow at the altar of aboriginal self-determination, however criminally it may be expressed, one should not be allowed to speak.
Mr. Kellar went on to tell Mr. Brean that “older members” of Kitchener-Waterloo Anti-Racist Action recalled me “glorifying” the neo-Nazi Ernst Zundel and went on to compare me to a Nazi propagandist.
Now, I knew damn well that I have never done anything of the sort, but before I said so, had Globe and Mail researcher Stephanie Chambers check the record.
She found that in more than 35 years of daily journalism, working for four different Toronto newspapers, I had mentioned Mr. Zundel’s name a total of five times, mostly peripherally.
In the one piece that was actually about him, this in 1994 when he had applied for Canadian citizenship, I defended his right to freedom of speech, but said, “There is no comparable right to citizenship” and concluded, “I am, in other words, wholeheartedly in favour of letting Ernst Zundel say anything in the whole world that he wants or believes – even that the Holocaust didn’t happen. The only four words, coming out of his mouth, that would make me cringe are these: ‘I’m a Canadian citizen.’”
I think I’ll bring my own bike lock when I’m back at Waterloo, with a suggestion where Mr. Kellar might put it.

Parliament Not A Bastion Of Free Speech.....
The words MPs dare not utter
The late comedian George Carlin used to talk about words that were banned on TV.
Well, there are also some words which have been officially banned in the House of Commons.
And when I say banned I mean banned. You will never, ever hear these outlawed words spoken in Parliament.
In fact, any MP impudent enough to utter any of these forbidden words would in short order be ejected from the House and kicked out of his or her Party.
For informational purposes only, here’s a partial list of the words MPs must never speak:
* Freedom
* Individualism
* Free Markets
* Smaller government
* Individual liberty
* Private property rights
* Personal responsibility
* Self-Reliance
* Freedom of expression
* Free enterprise
I am not sure who banned these words or why.
All I do know is our MPs from all parties are certainly respecting the rule. I mean when was the last time you heard an MP talk about “freedom?”

Here’s a tale of free speech. Sometimes it’s possible for a sign on the front lawn saying “I love life” to coexist peacefully with a neighbour’s sign saying “I love choice.” The neighbours may even nod to each other at the bus stop.
Things can get rocky when the choice-loving neighbour has more disposable income than the one who prefers life, and decides to erect a sign that blinks after sunset. Still, conflict isn’t inevitable. Unblinking neighbour can get a bank loan and make his own sign blink, or decide there’s more to life than blinking.
Things get more complicated when a municipality sets up a Blinking Sign Standards Enforcement Agency that makes unblinking neighbour fancy that blinking neighbour’s sign exceeds regulation height. Snitching requires no bank loan, but being forced to retain a local obfuscator who specializes in Blinking Lights Law does. Five thousand dollars later, when Commissioners Blinking, Winking and Nod decide that the impugned sign satisfies Section 2/-235 of the Signage and Sundry Act, there’s plenty of bad blood between neighbours. Free speech a lost concept in Canada -- again
We read:
"Strictly Right sent out a press release earlier today to Canadian media with some rather startling news about the upcoming Mark Steyn speech in London, Ontario that we’re putting together. Mark Steyn will be speaking on November 1st in a speech entitled “Head for the Hills: Why everything in your world is doomed.” Apparently, London-area Muslims didn’t like that idea too much.
Due to capacity constraints at the University of Western Ontario, the original venue for the event, we had booked the London Convention Centre (LCC,) London’s premiere conference facility. On Tuesday, I received a phone call from the LCC telling us that our venue had been pulled, and that Mark Steyn would not be permitted to speak there. The reason offered by the LCC was that they had received pressure from local Islamic groups, and they didn’t want to alienate their Muslim clients. It’s interesting to note that the LCC is owned by the City of London, and is therefore a government operation.
It’s interesting that a government-run business decided that freedom of speech was no longer a concept to be upheld.

On Tuesday, I received a phone call from the LCC telling us that our venue had been pulled, and that Mark Steyn would not be permitted to speak there. The reason offered by the LCC was that they had received pressure from local Islamic groups, and they didn’t want to alienate their Muslim clients. It’s interesting to note that the LCC is owned by the City of London, and is therefore a government operation.
It’s interesting that a government-run business decided that freedom of speech was no longer a concept to be upheld.

Childish opponents blow smoke over Sun TV News plan

I arrived back in Canada last week to the sound of children misbehaving.
At least I assume they were children in that they acted like children and behaved in a childish manner. To be precise they were metaphorically stamping their feet and screaming and yelling because someone was preparing to challenge them.
The juveniles in question were various people who had signed a petition and got on board an American-backed initiative to try to prevent Sun TV News from making it to Canada’s airwaves.
I should declare a vested interest here. The organizers of the new network are my friends and I intend to play a role in making the station a first-class, professional, entertaining and informative television phenomenon. Unlike so much else that is on our screens in this country.
But that aside, I have my own TV show, a syndicated column, books and much else and am not beholden to anyone. Goodness, even my critics would acknowledge this.
I support Sun TV news because I believe not only in freedom of speech, but in diversity of speech. It’s why I also, for example, supported Al-Jazeera’s right to broadcast.
As the left have been telling moral conservatives in particular for decades now: “If you don’t like it, don’t watch.”
If it’s bad it will fail, if it’s absurdly one-sided it will lose most of the country. Simple as that, really.
What it certainly will do is provide jobs for people in media and, silly me, I assumed that the left supported increased employment and a broader communications industry.
In all fairness, many of them do — my friend Sid Ryan, one of the most important labour leaders in Canada, has the “bring-it-on” approach, the more argument and debate the better.
One figure who did not share this ideal appeared to be novelist Margaret Atwood, who signed the anti-Sun TV News petition.
An anecdote. When this exciting project was being discussed back in January one of the organizers said to me that the more opposition from the “usual suspects” the better. He then said — and as God is my witness this is true — “with any luck we’ll have Margaret Atwood coming out against us.” True, true, true.
Oh Peggy, Sun TV News couldn’t buy this kind of publicity and once again the left have shown their useful idiot qualities and displayed that combination of hypocrisy and misunderstanding of the popular will that has made them such electoral giants.
Every time another liberal type screams that this will be Fox North and that the right will dominate it and that it’s just not fair, the people in charge at Sun TV News open another bottle of their Bollinger Bolshevik and Champagne Socialist booze.
The station is going to happen. Just like the CBC it will have certain biases. Unlike the CBC it will not be as crass in displaying them and you won’t have to finance the people who make and present the shows.
The world is changing, comrades, and all opinions are now allowed. I know it’s frightening but, as I said earlier, we can’t be children forever and it’s now time to put away childish things and grow up.
