...not only on many, many campuses, ask Christie Blatchford, Ann Coulter, but public venues where a Toronto citizen (David Menzies) was verbally and physically "assaulted" but police took no action.
Expect the Expected
Just over a week ago Anne Marie Waters, a Council Member of the National Secular Society, was scheduled to give a talk at Queen Mary University of London as a Co-Spokesperson on behalf of the anti-Shariah group One Law For All. You'll never guess what happened next:
Before (the talk) started, a man entered the lecture theatre, stood at the front with a camera and filmed the audience. He then said that he knew who everyone was, where they lived and if he heard anything negative about the Prophet, he would track them down. The man also filmed students in the foyer and threatened to murder them and their families. On leaving the building, he joined a large group of men, apparently there to support him.
Campus security to the rescue!
He said: 'If you have these discussions, what do you expect?'
Well, in any country anywhere in the world with a substantial Muslim population you can expect to be hung out to dry by politicians and law-enforcement officials. Would-be speaker Ann Marie Waters - who is courageous by virtue of even attempting to speak out against Islamist censorship and threats - seems just a half-step away from understanding that in the relativistic, equivocating West, front-line defenders of free speech are essentially on their own:
I am left wondering what exactly we could have done. I would love to say that we stood up to him and carried on bravely in a valiant defence of free speech, but it was a frightening experience and I know that people felt genuinely threatened and upset. In any case, is it the role of speakers and students to face off against potentially violent Islamists in defence of our free speech, risking our safety in the process?

"Cyber-bullying may become a criminal act in Georgia. That’s because a Blairsville man and his attorney are working with state legislatures after the man was accused of being a pedophile and drug user – on an Internet website.
Last week, Gene Cooley received a settlement for the internet libel case. Cooley got a 400-thousand dollar court settlement on January 13th.
Now, this all started in 2008, after Cooley’s fiancé was murdered. Colley says that while he was in Florida for her funeral, an Internet user posted several comments under various IDs on a website.
Colley says the user accused him of being a pervert and a drug addict. And he says because of those online accusations, his future in laws kicked him out. He also lost his job in Blairsville, and most importantly, he says, his reputation. So he moved to Augusta where he works as a hairstylist.
Cooley’s attorney got clearance to track down the IP address of the user and filed a lawsuit against Sybil Denise Ballew, who’s been accused of similar actions in the past.
And last week, Cooley says justice was finally served. And he hopes this will set a precedent for cyber bullies. "Literally it’s been murder,” Cooley says. “Not only was my fiancé murdered by an ex-husband, but my life and what little shred I had, was murdered by this person."
Attorney Russell Stookey adds, "What we need to do is to make some peace in this law that will bite these people who go on and do character assassinations by ambush. If we can get this law ruled, maybe we can clean up, these blogs where they go on blast people."

BLATCHFORD SPEAKS OUT...
Three protesters shut me down once; they won’t do it again

Two Fridays ago, I was driving in fog to give a talk about my new book, never dreaming I was about to join the list of those, most recently the American writer Ann Coulter and the former British MP George Galloway, who have been prevented from speaking at Canadian college campuses.
The difference, as Joe Brean wryly put it in a story in the National Post this week, is that where Ms. Coulter was shut down at the University of Ottawa by an unruly mob (which sufficiently alarmed authorities or her own security people that the event was cancelled), Mr. Galloway banned by the federal government (that decision overturned by a judge, with the result that Mr. Galloway was in Canada on a speaking tour this month), “Ms. Blatchford was shut down by three people and a couple of bike locks.”
I arrived late to the University of Waterloo to learn that the three, bike locks on their necks, were on the stage, behind the podium where I was to speak, chanting “Racist, racist, racist!”
We were all taken by surprise, I think – me, university spokesman Michael Strickland and a nice campus-police officer.
They asked what I’d like to do and I said I’d like to go on stage and give it a whirl, and that though I’d prefer the trio be removed first, I’d go on regardless. Nicola Makoway, the Doubleday/Random House publicist with me, asked if the police approved of that. The campus cop, who had called in a couple of cruisers from Waterloo Regional Police before I even got there, said no, because if things got rowdy, they wouldn’t be able to protect me.
Before I knew it, he had cancelled the event, and Nicola and I were back in the car, driving home to Toronto.
Now in the days since, I’ve been second-guessing myself all over the place: Should I have insisted on going on stage? Could I have? Should I have made a run through the curtains?
The reason, of course, is that there was something shameful about slinking away. To take liberties with a great line from the old movie Apocalypse Now, I hate the clank of bike lock in the evening; it sounds like defeat.
But I was an invited guest, not the boss of the university, and in those few minutes backstage, I deferred to those who worked for the school. It still feels like a mistake but I’m damned if I know what else I could have done.
The university brass appear to have felt the same way: President Feridun Hamdullahpur quickly phoned to apologize, I have been invited back and am going, and there it sits.
I think we were all mystified. I’m hardly a Coulter-esque stirrer of pots, but a reporter, and my book, which is about the ruination of the rule of law in Caledonia, Ont., during the native occupation there, is most sharply critical of the Ontario government and the senior ranks of the Ontario Provincial Police – that is, the state, which cheerfully threw the town under the bus.
I took pains in the book to explain what it is not about, and while I expected (and the university might have reasonably expected) there might be those who disagreed with that approach, it never occurred to me that anyone would try to stop me from speaking.
In fact, however, as I’ve only recently learned – publishers and their people tend to keep discouraging news from their authors, lest we crawl into the fetal position and stop typing – from the get-go, from the moment they began talking up Helpless: Caledonia’s Nightmare of Fear and Anarchy and How the Law Failed All of Us, they encountered what they call “pushback.”
Some bookstores were reluctant to host signings or events for fear of a native backlash; some news shows were less than keen to touch the subject for the same reason.
Their timidity seems to be all of a piece with what the U of W protesters said motivated them. As Dan Kellar, one of the three locked together on the stage, told Mr. Brean, I am a “settler” on native land who hasn’t come to term with settlers’ responsibilities and am therefore important to silence.
I take from that horse manure what I take from the booksellers’ reluctance: That if one doesn’t bow at the altar of aboriginal self-determination, however criminally it may be expressed, one should not be allowed to speak.
Mr. Kellar went on to tell Mr. Brean that “older members” of Kitchener-Waterloo Anti-Racist Action recalled me “glorifying” the neo-Nazi Ernst Zundel and went on to compare me to a Nazi propagandist.
Now, I knew damn well that I have never done anything of the sort, but before I said so, had Globe and Mail researcher Stephanie Chambers check the record.
She found that in more than 35 years of daily journalism, working for four different Toronto newspapers, I had mentioned Mr. Zundel’s name a total of five times, mostly peripherally.
In the one piece that was actually about him, this in 1994 when he had applied for Canadian citizenship, I defended his right to freedom of speech, but said, “There is no comparable right to citizenship” and concluded, “I am, in other words, wholeheartedly in favour of letting Ernst Zundel say anything in the whole world that he wants or believes – even that the Holocaust didn’t happen. The only four words, coming out of his mouth, that would make me cringe are these: ‘I’m a Canadian citizen.’”
I think I’ll bring my own bike lock when I’m back at Waterloo, with a suggestion where Mr. Kellar might put it.

Once again, I'm disappointed with Blatchford for not taking the stage, regardless.
UPDATE: Mark Steyn writes... Re my recent appearance in London, Ontario, I wrote that "'security concerns' are the new black(out)" .
The latest victim is my old pal, the great Christie Blatchford. Blatch is nobody's idea of a "right-winger" or "racist" -- indeed, she's so respectable she has a Globe & Mail contract and a Governor-General's Literary Award, neither of which I'm in danger of any time soon.
Nevertheless she was prevented from speaking by thugs at the University of Waterloo, and, as is now traditional, those responsible for "security" declined to provide any.
Just before I went on stage at the London event, my publicist whispered to me that she was impressed by the security team. "Whatever," I said. "But I reserve the right to beat up any disrupters myself."
If you've ever got into an argument with Christie, you'll know she should have done the same. If Christie Blatchford can't speak at a publicly-funded Canadian university, taxpayers should withhold every dime that goes to fund these totalitarian sinkholes.

After last week's election results rolled in, some on the left became distraught and went after Fox News big time. Of course, we are used to the growing problem of Fox-o-phobia: an irrational fear of the Fox News Channel. On election night, FNC won the national ratings race, even defeating the network news operations, which is incredible because cable channels are much harder to access than single digit network channels.
Immediately after the votes were counted, the incoming fire began. Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank wrote that Fox News held "a victory party" for Republicans on the air. Milbank then stated: "To be fair and balanced, Fox brought in a nominal Democrat, pollster Doug Schoen."
A nominal Democrat? Well, that is flat-out false. FNC had seven Democrats on the air that night, and I believe Geraldine Ferraro and Joe Trippi might be surprised to see themselves described as "nominal."
So, why did Milbank mislead his readers, and how does he get away with it? We put the second question to Fred Hiatt, Milbank's editor at the Post. After a few hours of deliberation, he told us he didn't think Milbank had implied that only one Democrat was booked on FNC's election coverage. Either Hiatt is having trouble with the English language, or he really doesn't care. I'm betting the latter. Neither Hiatt nor Milbank would come on my program to explain themselves.
As to why the columnist wants to mislead readers, it's simple. He despises Fox News and wants to spread the loathing. But that's lazy. There are plenty of things to criticize about any national news organization, especially one that broadcasts 24 hours a day. Milbank just wanted to vent and didn't care about being accurate. He cared about being hostile and bitter.
