Here’s how Nenshi defended turning a blind eye to law breaking:
“It’s funny, the number of people who have talked to me in the last couple of days who have said ‘the Occupy Calgary people need to get off Olympic Plaza so that all citizens can have rights to their front lawn.’ And I say, OK, so all citizens except the ones you don’t like should have a right to the front lawn. Because all means all in my opinion.”
All means all.
Unless they’re Christians having a peaceful, drug-free, sex-free celebration of Christmas in the people’s “living room.” Then Nenshi sends in boys with the billy clubs. For a pastor singing Christmas carols and reading Bible passages.
***BTW: we’re assured that Nenshi isn’t gay, but like 90% of leftwing big city males, he acts like he is so he might as well be.
So for once, we’re not dealing with a gay bully attacking Christians, which makes for a nice change.

Toronto Star opens a new front in war with Rob Ford
In case you hadn’t noticed, the Toronto Star is not happy about Rob Ford being mayor.
The Star did all it could to keep Ford from getting electing, throwing its full weight behind the campaign of Anyone Else in the Whole World. Mainly it put its hopes in George Smitherman, a loyal Liberal, going so far at one point as to suggest other candidates quit their campaigns and throw their support to Smitherman in a Block Ford manoeuvre.
The extent of the Star’s influence might be seen in the fact that voters ignored it in droves and elected Ford by a large margin. But that hasn’t stopped the bad blood. Ford, incensed at a Star story that suggested he’d had a “physical confrontation” with a player on a football team he coached, refuses to talk to the paper, and has barred it from receiving official notices and statements. “The Occupy Toronto demonstrators don’t have a coherent point? How risible,” the Toronto Star‘s Heather Mallick pronounces. As it happens, wouldn’t you know it, the Occupiers share every single one of Mallick’s complaints about modern Canada! Just ask her! They’re worried about how hard it is to get a history degree “without sinking into debt, or being told that your degree is worthless because it won’t get you hired, even though you know in your heart that a degree in anything, particularly history, will make you better able to understand, cope with, and vote against the life the 99-percenters are stuck with.” They’re upset that Canada isn’t spending taxpayer money to build a pavilion at Expo 2012 in Korea (because they’re such a worldly bunch). And, of course, they are furious that Stephen Harper “has an anti-sex social agenda to mirror his economic one, and it’s pure Tea Party,” whatever that means. (From previous Mallick columns, we’d gathered that the Prime Minister wanted all women barefoot and pregnant at all times, and then to kill themselves at menopause so as not to burden the health-care system further. The talking points seem to have changed.)
Go read and tell us if we’re wrong, but we think Mallick has set a bold new standard in nonsensical blathering. And we mean this honestly: Big kudos to the too-often-too-staid Star for printing something this random. (The Globe‘s often-catatonic comment pages could certainly take a lesson.) But this column is just a crazy, useless mess. A firm nudge in the direction of coherence is very much in order.

After two years of relative calm, a suitcase bombing in Jerusalem, rocket attacks from Gaza, and Israeli counter-attacks reminded the world that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is still unresolved. A few readers accused the Western media of ignoring this issue.
“I have noticed that the global media no longer bothers to hide its lack of interest in Israel’s war on terror, focusing only on how many Arabs Israel kills in self-defence while publishing micro-sized articles on the murder of a sleeping [Jewish West Bank] family or a bomb placed [near] a public bus stop during rush hour,” wrote Sarah Samole, a resident of Ma’ale Adumim, a Jewish settlement in the West Bank. “Could you imagine if the bomb blast occurred at a downtown NYC bus stop? But it’s just Israel, a country that has been so demonized by mainstream media — excluding the National Post, usually — that it has merited no right to defend itself, according to those who can’t even point it out on a map.”

Sun TV News, Quebecor's all-news network, has been approved by Canada's broadcast regulator.
The CRTC announced on Friday that it has granted the forthcoming national news service approval to broadcast as an English-language, Category 2, specialty TV channel.
In its statement, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission reiterated "the importance of maintaining and enhancing the plurality of editorial voices in local and national markets and ensuring that Canadians are exposed to an appropriate plurality of those voices."
"The licensing of additional competitive mainstream national news services is one means of achieving this objective," the CRTC statement added.
The CRTC's list of Category 2 specialty channels is wide-ranging and includes services such as Animal Planet, National Geographic Channel, the NHL Network, GameTV and Nikelodeon.
"Today marks the dawn of a new era for Canadian news media," Quebecor Media president and CEO Pierre Karl Péladeau said in a statement reacting to the CRTC announcement.
"[Sun TV News] will aim to challenge conventional wisdom and offer Canadians a new choice and a new voice on TV."
Run by Quebecor's TVA Group and Sun Media divisions, the new right-leaning network will replace the over-the-air Sun TV station in Toronto and have its headquarters there.
'Hard news and straight talk'
Since Péladeau unveiled plans for the network in June, its motto has been "hard news and straight talk." Some in the industry have dubbed the service "Fox News North" — a label Sun TV News officials have rejected.
Quebecor had initially sought Category 1 status, which would guarantee it a place among the default channels for all cable subscribers, like news rivals such as CBC News Network and CTV News Channel.
However, the CRTC is not considering new tier-one broadcast licences until October 2011, following the switchover of all Canadian TV signals from over-the-air to digital.
The media company subsequently requested a must-carry exemption for its Category 2 licence bid. The request was to be the subject of a public hearing scheduled this month, but Quebecor announced it was dropping the must-carry bid in October.
In recent months, Sun TV News has announced a number of high-profile hirings, including former CBC journalist Krista Erickson, commentator and broadcaster Charles Adler, veteran journalist David Akin, radio broadcaster Brian Lilley and columnist Ezra Levant.
The network is expected to take to the airwaves in spring 2011.
