Canadian Leftist Blindness on Display
This video from Michael Coren's show, courteously uploaded by Matt from Mississauga, is focused on recent happenings in America. Carefully listen to Toronto Newstalk 1010's Britt Aharoni and you will hear a deep seated antipathy, if not hatred, for U.S. conservatives and libertarians, that rivals another Big Smoke "journalist" named Heather Mallick. Ms. Aharoni is completely blind to anything untoward that might possibly come out of the mouths of someone on the Left side of the political spectrum.
Do you think Bob Rae's recent comment about Jihadists working in PM Harper's office offended her? Unlikely. Do you think Mass. Representative Mike Capuano's recent calls for violence against Tea Party members gave her pause for thought? Unlikely. Do you think that the campaign of vilification against Jews raged by the man to her right, the despicable Sid Ryan, has kept her awake at night? Unlikely.
Ms. Aharoni is typical of the vast majority of members of Canada's Mainstream Media who deem themselves to be "liberals". In their newsrooms, cocktail parties, and other bubble chambers they repeatedly tell each other how righteous and free thinking and unbiased they are. The reality is far, far afield from such group think delusions. This is a huge reason why an ever increasing number of Canadians feel alienated from them and no longer take them seriously.
As 2011 unfolds and a possible federal election campaign transpires, keep very clear in your mind that Britt Aharoni and other close-minded clones like her are the ones filtering the "news" you'll be getting from Canada's MSM. The Truth Is Out There but it sure ain't comin' from them!

Thanks Howard! I Didn't Know I Was An Embiggener...
...but rather I viewed myself as a person who saw the silliness of much of the news.
Howard Richler: A language embiggened by cartoons
By Howard Richler
‘If a future turn of events in Africa was seen as requiring the island’s military role to be embiggened and its facilities rendered much more secure, it might be convenient if the islanders had no legal right to remain where they were.”
— The Economist, Sept. 21, 2010.
Could my aging eyes be betraying me? Would my favourite magazine, The Economist, have deigned to use such an unlettered barbarism as “embiggened”? Just to be sure that I hadn’t suddenly morphed into a pedant, I checked my word bible, the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), as well as two other dictionaries, to confirm that “embiggened” did not enjoy any lexicographic existence.
On the other hand, fans of The Simpsons would more than likely recognize “embiggened.” It was first used in 1996 during the episode Lisa the Iconoclast, and Wikipedia reports that it “has seen use in several scientific publications,” although it didn’t specify which publications. I say, shame on The Economist for stooping to use a non-word such as “embiggen.” At least in The Simpsons episode the word had a specific sense — that of ennoblement: “A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man.” In The Economist article it merely refers to the possibility of enlarging the military role of the Ascension Island.
Another word first used on The Simpsons (but so far not found in The Economist) is “cromulent.” On the website Urban Dictionary we are told that “[‘cromulent’] is used in an ironic sense to mean legitimate and therefore, in reality, spurious and not at all legitimate.” This word came out of the same Simpsons episode that bred “embiggened.” A character states “my friend didn’t believe me when I told her that meese was the plural of moose, but she admitted that it was entirely cromulent.”
Googling “cromulent” and “embiggen” elicits thousands of hits, but whereas “embiggen” won’t be found in any mainstream dictionaries, “cromulent” does appear in Webster’s New Millennium Dictionary of English.
The Oxford Companion to the English Language lists nine ways that neologisms (newly invented words or phrases) are formed including: compounding (e.g., “blackboard”), shifting meaning (e.g., “spin” to mean “bias”), blending (e.g., “smog” from “smoke” and “fog”) and borrowing from other languages (e.g., “glasnost” from Russian).
Under its ninth category it states that we “very rarely [see] root creation, or coinage from sounds with no previous known meaning.” The designation “very rarely” is hardly an exaggeration. While there are over 750,000 words listed in the OED, no more than two dozen of these words fall into this ex nihilo (out of nothing) category. There are many words in our language that are named after people such as “lynch” and “sandwich,” but these words derive from flesh and blood rather than appearing out of the blue.
A good chunk of the truly ex nihilo words in our language started their lives simply as trademarks, such as Band-Aid, nylon and Kodak, but there are some others that display far more interesting origins.
For example, just this past September, the word “eggcorn” found its way into the hallowed pages of the OED with the following definition: “An alteration of a word or phrase through the mishearing or reinterpretation of one or more of its elements as a similar-sounding word.” The word was created by linguist Geoffrey Pullum, who noticed that some people call an “acorn” an “eggcorn,” probably due an acorn’s egg shape. However, the OED definition needs honing because it doesn’t differentiate an eggcorn from a malaprop (e.g., referring to a “tubal ligation” as a “tubal litigation”) or a mondegreen (e.g., hearing “the cross I bear” as “the cross-eyed bear.”)
An ex nihilo word may find its way into our language simply because the word’s progenitor likes its sound. When American physicist Murray Gell-Mann discovered a new particle in 1964, he at first called it a “quork.” He eventually switched the name to “quark,” a word he discovered in this passage from Finnegan’s Wake by James Joyce: “Three quarks for Mister Mark,” which referred to an order for three quarts of beer placed in a pub.
The science fiction writer Robert Heinlein is also credited with creating an ex-nihilo word. In his 1961 novel Stranger in a Strange Land, he introduced the verb “to grok” to refer to intuitive understanding. The term caught on and in 1968 Tom Wolfe used the verb in The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test: “Instead they are all rapping and grokking over the sound.”
One need not be an author, physicist, linguist or, come to think of it, even an adult to create a lasting ex nihilo term. Perhaps the best-known of this genre of words is “googol,” which refers to the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeroes. In 1940, distinguished American mathematician Edward Kasner asked his nine-year-old nephew, Milton Sirotta, to make up a name for a very big number and the lad responded, “googol.” Not bound by the confines of “googol,” Milton suggested that the term “googolplex” be applied to the number one followed by a googol zeroes. Using “googolplex” as shorthand for this finite number is definitely a time-saving device, for, as Kasner noted, “there would not be enough room to write it, if you went to the farthest star, touring all the nebulae, and putting zeroes every inch of the way.”
Just think. There’s probably a kid out there who is going to embiggen the language and grok new words we can’t fathom. How cromulent is that?

The real deal behind Fox News North
The Leftist hate speech never stopsWe read:
"Actor John Cusack went on a caustic Twitter rampage Sunday evening, attacking former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Fox News.
“I AM FOR A SATANIC DEATH CULT CENTER AT FOX NEWS HQ AND OUTSIDE THE OFFICES ORDICK ARMEYAND NEWT GINGRICH-and all the GOP WELFARE FREAKS,” Cusack tweeted.
And while the U.S. Constitution protects Cusack's right to speak his mind, some critics say he should be more careful about what he says, since he has more than 200,000 Twitter followers.
“His provocative tweets could easily incite a rabid fan to commit violent acts against Fox News Headquarters and others he names," said Dr. Carole Lieberman, a Beverly Hills-based psychiatrist

I am rather pleased to say that I had never heard of Mr Cusack before this news

Protest coverage: all live, all the time, all shallow
It was black vs. black on the streets and no one asked why
Globe and Mail Update Published on Sunday, Jun. 27, 2010 3:59PM EDT Last updated on Sunday, Jun. 27, 2010 4:04PM EDT
In the 77th minute of the pulsating World Cup game between Ghana and the U.S.A. - then tied 1-1 – the text crawled across the TV screen. G20 protests, violent clashes. Some people looked at their iPhone or BlackBerry. Some glanced out the window. Nobody moved.
It was happening, is all. The customary theatre of the protests. Without even seeing the footage we could all picture it – kids in black hoodies and bandanas throwing stones, breaking windows and, probably, setting a police car on fire. That’s precisely what it was, of course.
See, the G20 is the Oscars of the protest-world. Tons of media attention, not much context. Photo-ops and fame. And television coverage of the G20 Summit and the protests in Toronto has been drearily predictable, and mostly as mindless as Oscars coverage. The protests – representing nothing more than infantile, pay-attention-to-me-Mommy exhibitionism and destruction – are photo-opportunities as much as the politicians’ statements and handshakes, are photo-ops. Getting on television is pretty much the point of everything, and television loves live, violent action as it loves movie stars.
Thus, so much of our TV news seemed to be salivating at the prospect of protests. Dramatic footage! Riot police! Gangs of roving youths. Running battles on the street! And it became stupendously obvious in the lead-up to Friday and Saturday that local TV news was worshipping at the altar of local police authorities. Local TV news tends to gravitate toward authority on a daily basis anyway, but in Toronto in the last week the sense of paranoia fostered by the police was absorbed and spread to a ridiculous extent.
As a result, obvious questions were never asked. No context for the rioting and destruction that was to come on Saturday in Toronto was ever provided. This was an occasion in which all the shallowness and predictability of TV news was glaringly illuminated.
Far as I can tell, nobody ever asked anyone in authority – government or police – if the grandiosity of the security preparations in downtown Toronto wasn’t an invitation, a challenge even, to the pseudo-anarchists to attack and do their worst. Nobody in the TV news racket seemed willing to ask why, if “security” was the main concern, the G20 was being held in the core of a major city in the first place.
Nobody on TV was prepared, or indeed intellectually equipped, one suspects, to see the enormous fences and the extreme disruption of downtown life and business, as a symbolic act of hostility against a population, and as symbolic examples of the remoteness of the powerful from ordinary people.
Further, nobody on TV was ever willing to suggest that there is a bizarre symbiotic relationship between the forces comprised of black-clad riot police and the “Black Bloc” anarchists. I mean, seriously – these are two groups of guys getting dressed up in black to go out and do some damage to somebody or something. No matter what they tell you, me or those perky TV news reporters, these all just guys itching for a showdown.
While I’m at it, it would have been useful if some TV pundit had suggested that anyone planning to protest in Toronto during the G20 would make a point with more pith and less aggravation if they’d simply stayed home and issued a press release. Thus the staggering $1.2-billion cost of summit security would have been revealed as the ludicrous excess it surely was.
But nobody was going to make that suggestion and nobody was going to stay home. Everybody wants to be seen on TV, making a speech, cheering, carrying a banner or pointing a finger at somebody else. Look, ma! Top of the world, ma!
What we all saw on TV, eventually, was perplexing - empty streets, burning police cars, the smashing of shop windows, vast armies of police moving this way and that, in a bizarre dance. Some reporters expressed shock - the ones who have never been in the middle of a truly terrifying clash between authorities and protesters. We saw $1.2-billion of taxpayer money evaporating, and nobody asking: Why?

News Fit To And Must Be Heard...
New voice for Canada
Outrage over Sun TV News as tired and predictable as CBC
By MICHAEL COREN, QMI Agency
Last Updated: June 19, 2010 2:14am
Quebecor announces a new network and the usual hacks drown in cynicism and outrage. You’d think that journalists would welcome another TV station — it will provide jobs and expand the debate. But anybody who has been in Canadian journalism for more than a heartbeat knows that will never be the case.
Media in this country is about shaping — and not reflecting — public opinion. It resents challenge, relishes its complacent sense of superiority and despises anything that even hints of the American model because it terrifies them. Not that the new network looks to be particularly American. The people, so far announced to be involved are all Canadians, all experienced, all highly qualified.
The new network will apparently be called Sun TV News, but has already been labelled as Fox North. “We call it that,” explained one television host, “because the guys behind it have spent time down at Fox.” What an odd thing to do! Why on earth look to the most successful new TV network in the world for some sort of advice and guidance. Far better to do the CBC thing and reformat news and opinion shows by having people stand up rather than sit down.
The real reason the Fox North title is being used over and over again is that to most in Canadian media it feels like an insult. Actually Fox News in the U.S. does have a bias, just as CNN, CBS, NBC and the rest do. The difference being that people actually watch Fox News.
After the abuse comes the argument that there won’t be a market for such a network. Frankly I think there will be, but we simply don’t know until it’s tried. What we do know is that there isn’t much of a market for what’s out there right now. Take a look at the audience figures for shows on CBC, CTV and Global and you’ll realize just how few people watch Canadian news and current affairs.
That’s disappointing in the private sector, but positively scandalous in the public. Millions of your dollars spent on programs on the CBC that attract less than 30,000 viewers. If it wasn’t for hockey and Coronation Street, the corporation would largely collapse. It’s simply an illusion that Canadian television delivers what people want. It’s more that smug elitists assume they deliver what Canadians need. And what they need, it seems, is dull, intellectually bland and consistently left-of-centre.
Ask any genuinely conservative journalist in Canada if they’ve been treated fairly by this country’s television stations and they’ll laugh at your naivete. I, for one, have been told to my face that I’ve been banned from various shows and I’m far from unique. Yet it’s not us but you who matter in all this. People deserve choice and variety and it appears they’re going to get it. Hey lefty journalists, if you don’t like it, don’t watch.
Oh but you will, and that’s what’s making you so incredibly angry.

Moving The Truth From The Back Burner...
Tasha Kheiriddin: Fox News North a welcome addition to Canadian media jungle
By Tasha Kheiriddin June 11, 2010 – 10:30 am

Pierre Karl Peladeau
Funny, but when the decidedly left-wing Al Jazeera English (AJE) got regulatory approval last month for broadcast in Canada, nary a peep was heard from Parliament Hill, and its arrival was welcomed by media organizations such as Canadian Journalists for Free Expression. (Ironically, their news release contained no mention of the lack of freedom of expression in Qatar, where AJE’s openly anti-Semitic parent network Al Jazeera Arabic is based). But this reaction should not be too surprising. Fairness seems to be a relative concept in Canadian broadcasting – what’s left is fair, and what’s right is fair game for suspicion. Read More »

It Can't Be Menopause So You Have To Wonder...
...how objective Thomas' reporting has been:
Lorne Gunter: Why Helen Thomas’ remarks can’t be a ‘mistake.’
By Lorne Gunter June 7, 2010 – 6:16 pm
Over on the Fox News blog, Fox Forum, Ellen Ratner implores readers to give Helen Thomas a break. Ms. Thomas is the 89-year-old White House correspondent who retired today over remarks she made last month about Israeli Jews. The remarks were captured on a video camera and have recently been making the rounds on the Internet.
When asked about recent arrests of Palestinians by Israel (this was before the terrorist-activist flotilla attempted to run Israel’s blockade of Gaza), Ms. Thomas shot back “get the hell out of Palestine. Remember, these people are occupied. And it’s their land.”
Ms. Thomas later added Jews living in Israel should go “home — [to] Poland, Germany . . . and America, and everywhere else.”

Isn't That The Truth...
The Canadian on the Gaza flotilla was a genuine peacenik
By Jonathan Kay May 31, 2010 – 4:24 pm
Earlier today, I blogged about the violent “activists” who provoked the deadly treatment they got at the hands of Israel’s military off the coast of Gaza. Since then, we’ve learned that one of the activists participating in the six-boat flotilla is Kevin Neish, a 53-year-old pro-Palestinian activist from Victoria, B.C.
For what it’s worth, Neish — unlike the violent thugs who sparked the confrontation with the Israelis — seems to have been a genuine pacifist. Here’s a snippet of an interview he gave, from Crete, with Rabble.ca about the (then) upcoming flotilla:

[My role on the boat is that] I’m supposed to delay the [Israeli] commandos enough — non-violently, of course — that [a] film crew can get their footage … I’ve been tasked with basically standing in a passageway that leads to the upper deck, and being in the way, non-violently.I hope he wasn’t hurt in the encounter. If his words here are sincere, then he seems to have been duped by the violent elements in the Free Gaza convoy as much as everyone else.

The media fraternity got it wrong - very wrong

A Columnists's Columnist!
Christie Blatchford
From screams to whimpers on Afghan detainees
Allegations that fueled shooting match replaced in some arenas with Celine’s new swimming pool to almost nothing at all.
You can’t contradict Colvin
Powers: I don't want to parrot what Christie Blatchford wrote Saturday concerning the challenges to whistleblower Richard Colvin's testimony brought forward this week –challenges ignored by virtually all but the Globe and Mail.
