An Interesting Perspective...
FP’s Lawrence Solomon: Oil redeems Israel
Prior to the 1973-74 OPEC oil crisis, Israel was the darling of the left, extolled as a feisty, altruistic country that made socialism work in a hostile neighbourhood of Arab military dictatorships and Muslim theocracies. The liberal press defended Israel against those who objected to Israel’s existence. The liberal intelligentsia — Jew and non-Jew alike — sent their youth to Israeli kibbutzes, to be inspired by this utopian model of communal life where all received the same wage, regardless of occupation.
Almost immediately after the OPEC nations quadrupled oil prices to punish the West for its support of Israel, the left turned, along with many in the center and on the right, too.

The World Is Achanging BUT Not In The Middle East...
About 10 years ago, when the spiritual leader of Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, was still with us, he gave an interview to freelance photo-journalist Flore de Préneuf. Unlike the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s cagey Yasser Arafat, whose shtick was his forked tongue, Yassin preferred speaking in plain language. “Hamas was established to resist and kick out the occupier,” he told de Préneuf. “All of Israel, Tel Aviv included, is occupied Palestine.”
Ten years later, Yessin is dead, and so is Arafat. Many of my colleagues see a fundamental change in the Middle East. Maybe it’s my glasses, but I see nothing.

The Man On The Street Speaks Out...
Re: Slaves To The Status Quo, Leon Wieseltier, May 20.
For the second time in as many weeks, a columnist in the Post is claiming that Benjamin Netanyahu has done nothing to advance the peace process. Leon Wieseltier asserts that Mr. Netanyahu “refused to accede to the American request that he put a stop to the settlements.” But he did. Mr. Netanyahu imposed a 10-month moratorium on settlement building, despite protests from his political base. By refusing to come to the table until the final month, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas made it impossible for Mr. Netanyahu to renew the moratorium. Mr. Netanyahu may have his faults, but he should be recognized for his genuine attempts at peace. Stephen Tannenbaum, Thornhill, Ont.
Whenever I hear the likes of Leon Wieseltier and Barack Obama decry “the status quo” as it pertains to Israel and the Palestinians, I can’t help but feel that, Read More »

Mideast impasse: Obama’s firm push for peace

The world may have given up on Mideast peace. But not U.S. President Barack Obama. As he recalibrates American foreign policy in the midst of an Arab Awakening that has liberated millions, he is actively knocking heads to get Palestinians and Israelis to catch the wave, to set aside old enmities and to get back to the bargaining table.

Media In The West Have More Important Items On Their Plate...
Paul Russell: More Israel news, please, but limit anti-nuclear and pro-Justin coverage
After two years of relative calm, a suitcase bombing in Jerusalem, rocket attacks from Gaza, and Israeli counter-attacks reminded the world that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is still unresolved. A few readers accused the Western media of ignoring this issue.
“I have noticed that the global media no longer bothers to hide its lack of interest in Israel’s war on terror, focusing only on how many Arabs Israel kills in self-defence while publishing micro-sized articles on the murder of a sleeping [Jewish West Bank] family or a bomb placed [near] a public bus stop during rush hour,” wrote Sarah Samole, a resident of Ma’ale Adumim, a Jewish settlement in the West Bank. “Could you imagine if the bomb blast occurred at a downtown NYC bus stop? But it’s just Israel, a country that has been so demonized by mainstream media — excluding the National Post, usually — that it has merited no right to defend itself, according to those who can’t even point it out on a map.”
A handful of other readers were upset by a headline on our front page on Thursday: “Bus blast heralds new cycle of violence.”

George Jonas: Crusade of the peace terrorists
The flotilla of peace terrorists sailing towards the Gaza strip in the early hours of Monday had little interest in delivering wheelchairs to the halt and the lame. The humanitarian supplies aboard their vessels were incidental to their mission, which was to run Israel’s blockade.Nobody likes blockades. They’re acts of war, with all the usual costs and hazards, but without the potential benefits. They offer no gain, no glory, just a bad press. Blockades are policies of perceived necessity, not policies of choice. Read More »

- Those of you who are slamming Israel should take a serious look at history and the real facts of today's world....Israel is the ONLY Democracy in the Middle East.....PERIOD...... The Israelis are the front line against the jihadists ,al-quaida, Hamas, Hezbollah, Fatah and numerous other hate and suicide groups dedicated to the destruction of Israel. You, as a Westerner, would never tolerate the living conditions you would have to live under as a non Muslim minority in those communities.....that's if you were allowed to live in the first place.....Make peace with these fanatics?.....Get real!.....It'll never happen.....If Israel were ever to be overrun, guess who they're coming for next.....So get your head out of your asses and prepare!
This Time Goliath Is On Our Side...
...and this time "Omar" doesn't have rocks in his sling but rockets, suicide bombers, etc.
...Hamas classifies this as humanitarian aid?
No winner in boat raid
Some countries have a right to indulge in moral outrage.
They have a relatively pure foreign policy, try to be even-handed and treat their own people, particularly religious and ethnic minorities, with courtesy and respect. Turkey is not one of them. Which makes the withdrawal of their ambassador to Israel and their shouts of protest at the Jewish state’s boarding of a Turkish ship loaded with armed extremists just a little hypocritical.
This is the same Turkey that sent 20,000 soldiers into autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan just a few years ago and bombed and shelled thousands of innocent people. The same Turkey where Kurds are persecuted and their leaders assassinated. The same Turkey that attempted a genocide of the Armenians before and during the First World War and still refuses to admit the slaughter of up to 1.5 million innocent people. Making the country akin to state holocaust deniers.
The same Turkey that closed down a Roman Catholic seminary, where Christians are frequently attacked and where the most important church in Eastern Orthodoxy was destroyed so that a mosque could be built over it. The same Turkey that invaded Cyprus in 1975 and still occupies a country not its own. Meaning it’s rather ironic that the Turkish government is so upset over what happened. Ask what would have occurred if an Israeli ship had tried to enter Turkey illegally to aid the Kurds. There would have been no commando raid because there would have been no boat left.
A few basic facts. Israel sends 15,000 tons of supplies to Gaza every week and nothing on any of the boats intercepted earlier this week is unavailable in Gaza. Including, tragically, the guns that were fired at the Israeli soldiers. As the leader of the flotilla said openly, “This is not about bringing humanitarian aid but about making a political statement.”
Video footage shows the Israelis being clubbed, kicked and knifed as they landed on the Turkish boat and only using their weapons after minutes of attack. It could well be argued that they should not have boarded in the first place, but the notion that these were mere peace activists is horribly absurd.
All of the other boats did contain such people and whatever anybody may think of their ideas or motives, they co-operated with the Israelis and nobody was badly hurt. It was only the Turkish vessel, full of Islamic fanatics connected to various Muslim extremist groups, where violence occurred.
Nobody is clean in all of this because the blockade is politically foolish and probably ethically wrong, but the big winners are Hamas, who have become masters at exploiting the media trap they set for the Israelis. It’s extraordinary that Jews invented Hollywood, but Israelis can’t fathom even basic optics and propaganda.
As for most of the countries in the region, they simply don’t care what people think of them and generally they’re right. Iran hangs another teenager and the western press turns away, the Saudis beat another woman and western universities accept another professorship sponsored from Riyadh.
All a colossal mess really. Makes one want to forget everything and book an ocean cruise. Then again ...

- Jonathon Narvey: Zionist plot on Vancouver, foiled.
- Posted: January 15, 2010, 1:15 PM by NP Editor
My Zionist brothers and sisters, this is your Mossad station chief in Vancouver. I ask for your forgiveness for breaching our security protocols through this public broadcast. It was necessary to reach you all before the operation came into full effect.
Operation Glowing Hearts is aborted.
Our plot has been found out. While it is clear that these plucky freedom fighters have not yet stumbled on the details of our plan, it will only be a matter of time before they discover the nuclear weapons we stowed underneath the Olympic Oval and GM place. Your new orders are to immediately retrieve all radioactive materials and evacuate Canadian soil.

I Can Emphasize With Sarah Rabinovitch But...
Mom, daughter too frightened to stay at event
September 19, 2009
On Tuesday night I attended an event at Ryerson University with my 17-year-old daughter. The event was a discussion of the recent filmmakers' protest of TIFF's "Spotlight on Tel Aviv." My daughter, like me, is deeply interested in the Israeli/Palestinian situation, and we went hoping to find out more.
But 15 minutes into the event we had to leave because she was so afraid the event would disrupt into violence. We had seen the protestors from the Jewish Defence League at the door when we came in, and, in her words, there were some "very angry people" sitting in front of us from the same organization. Her 17-year-old imagination couldn't stop picturing scenes of violence.
As I left with my daughter I was distraught and deeply saddened to see her upset and that we were missing an important opportunity to learn and listen. I ask you, members of the JDL, and others who attempt to shut down dialogue on this issue, is this your aim?
To frighten Jewish youth to such an extent that they can't hear or participate in an information-sharing event? To scare people into agreeing with you? Think about it.

Reverse Boycotting
- Charles Lewis: Boycotting the Israel boycotters
- Posted: September 04, 2009, 1:17 PM by NP Editor
I picked up the National Post this morning to see the highly glossed faces of a group of actors, musicians and writers who have decided to protest the showing of a 10-film program to be highlighted at the Toronto International Film Festival.
It is no surprise that they are targeting a series of 10 films about Tel Aviv. Every protest today by intellectuals or artists who think they are intellectuals has to be about Israel. It is the worst country in the world, is it not?
The 50 protesters, including David Byrne, Jane Fonda and Naomi Klein, believe the films are actually part of a sinister Israeli propaganda plot, unbeknownst to those running the film festival.
They say, as they always do, that they are not anti-Semitic or anti-Israeli, but they feel they must say something in the “wake of this year’s brutal assault on Gaza,” and therefore the films should not be shown.

Gay and Right
Cotler on the Goldstone Inquiry....
It helps undermine the credibility of the UN....Disturbing as it may be, the failure to include a thorough review of Hamas's continuous rocket attacks in the resolution establishing the Goldstone Commission - and to then staff the mission with a member who has already decided that such attacks do not alter Israel's guilt - can be seen as evidence of the reductionist narrative that the UN Human Rights Council seeks to promulgate.
