Unlike the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s cagey Yasser Arafat, whose shtick was his forked tongue, Yassin preferred speaking in plain language. “Hamas was established to resist and kick out the occupier,” he told de Préneuf. “All of Israel, Tel Aviv included, is occupied Palestine.”
Ten years later, Yessin is dead, and so is Arafat. Many of my colleagues see a fundamental change in the Middle East. Maybe it’s my glasses, but I see nothing.

Police seen with real live guns in downtown Vancouver
Today, Vancouver riot police were photographed with rifles. It is being said that the guns carried by police in the attached photo are M-16 or M4s, but this has not been confirmed.
Whatever the model number on these rifles, their presence is certain to increase the set of risks faced by Canadians who choose to exercise their right to public protest.

Fear-mongering - plain and simple. Rabble should be titled "Babble", I suggest, for the less-than-sane paranoia constantly being promulgated.
Peaceful protest is welcome in Canada - I think most Canadians value free-speech and the progressive dialogue it engenders. I think many also agree with many of the protesters' opinions of Campbell, Harper, VANOC, and the Olympics in general.
But there are limits. When activists become vandals, when - like other terrorists - they encourage a climate of fear by becoming violent, when they help justify ridiculous Olympic security budgets by their childish aggressive behaviour, then I don't think Canadians have much sympathy. Peaceful protesters who tolerate the rabble in their midst smashing windows or whatnot are just as responsible for the presence of riot police with rifles as the paranoid officials who hired them. And what's the difference between regular police officers carrying handguns and crowd control officers carrying rifles anyway? Both types of bullets kill just as well. Neither is preferable...nor is allowing crazy people to run rampant and threaten others' peace and safety.
I don't like the presence of armed security personnel in my neighbourhood and helicopters buzzing constantly overhead; but if it helps ensure the peace and safety of myself and Vancouver's global guests, then so be it.

If protesters were not viciously violent police would not have to arm themselves this way. Bicycle chains wrapped around fists, hammers hidden in bags? Come on is this protest or simple mindless violence. Violence begets violence. Anti-Olympic protest is justified, violence and property damage is not.

Cents has it right. As Canadians we abhor the blatant show of force, we lower our heads in shame each time force is met with force, having learned long ago that nothing comes of it. As Canadians we know we can do much better than this, but acquiesce in the face of extremist action.
We also cringe when fellow Canadians (and likely a few outsiders) embarrass our city, province and country with mindless vandalism and threats that warrant this level of security. The Olympics are held on an international stage and unfortunately we need to plan for the sort of idiocies wrought by organized rebels supported by leaderless organizations like the Olympic Resistance Network.
But here is the real rub. If the vandals and rabble rousers honestly believe in their cause, if they feel so strongly about where money flows and absorbs through world class events like the Olympics, how do they balance the wasted expenditure of this heightened security?
Expenditure on security at this scale is directly attributed to anti-Olympic acts, local and international threats motivated by misinformed value systems of a very few. The blatant show of force further diminishes opportunity for the homeless, the environment or the ‘pick of the week' injustice that is cited as the cause for protest.
Of course the police walk down our streets carrying guns, you brought them. They are your guns, your show and your example of leadership. It is the sort of wish you dreamed would come true as you waxed on about wanting to save the world.

Predictably, the reaction of security authorities to the Nigerian man who attempted to blow up a passenger plan landing in Detroit (we're just going to dispense with the "allegedlys" here, if you don't mind) is to make life as miserable as possible for all the people who didn't try to blow up a plane on Christmas morning.
They missed a guy from Nigeria, who was so radicalized that his own father grew frightened about his intentions and notified U.S. authorities. So everyone else has to suffer: old ladies, mothers with babies, students, families on their way to a holiday. Wailing kids are forced to stand around uselessly in a mob of frustrated travellers in a boring airport just so the security people can make a show of how careful they're being, just in case that grandfather from Bute turns out to be an Al-Qaeda mad bomber in disguise. Folks are needlessly humiliated, forced to pry open their bags on the airport floor, dragging out their carefully packed clothes and toiletries, jamming stuff from one suitcase into another to please the new, arbitrary regulations adopted in a panic by a security apparatus in a high state of embarrassment.

Most Canadians Don't Give A Damn About Khadr

July 27th, 2008Michael Coren receives an email from an unbalanced (read: biased… or don’t) “journalist” at the CBC who didn’t think Omar Khadr should be anything less than sainted.
Last week I wrote about the case of Omar Khadr and how I had more sympathy for the young medic who was killed when Khadr was captured than for the man currently in custody at Guantanamo Bay. I said that he should have faced a trial by now but that much of the supposed compassion thrown at him was motivated more by hatred of the United States than love for justice and truth.
Hundreds of e-mails arrived, of course. Most in my favour, but many against, which is all a healthy indication of democracy and free speech. One, however, was particularly interesting, in that it was sent by someone who is paid by our tax dollars to be objective and balanced.

But the mainstream support for his return to Canada probably hit a peak the day BEFORE the “smoking gun” interrogation tapes were released last week, and is surely on the wane. Mohamed Elmasry, president of the Canadian Islamic Congress and the self-styled caliph of Canada has a way with words. If he is not praising the dictator of Zimbabwe, he is claiming that Egypt has more press freedom than Canada or he is justifying the targeting of Israeli civilians as legitimate combatants.
Yesterday, in an op-ed piece distributed on his e-mail list, Elmasry accused Prime Minister Stephen Harper of being a racist, saying the PM remains indifferent to Omar Khadr’s plight because the young man is “brown-skinned.”
And if playing the race card was not enough, Elmasry compared Omar Khadr's internment to that of William Sampson who was sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia in 2003. Elmasry asked: “Why is Stephen Harper so callously indifferent to Omar Khadr’s case? It’s painfully obvious: William Sampson is a white Westerner while his fellow Canadian citizen, Omar Khadr, is brown-skinned and a Muslim.”
Did it occur to Elmasry that William Sampson had not gone to Saudi Arabia to wage a crusade against Islam while Khadr was a recruit in Osama Bin Laden's jihad against Canada and its coalition partners in NATO? - More

Apologies for the crude title, but it is the title of a thread on the Pakistani Defence Forum at PakistaniDefence.com concerning the news that Benazir Bhutto has been killed today. There is a poll there that is very revealing. Though we might count supporters of Pervez Musharraf or elements of the Pakistani Security Services in the ranks of suspects, it is interesting to see the world's number one villain bubbling to the top of the list in this unscientific survey.
The United States. Of course. It's so obvious when you think about it.

And that's the view of the moderate Democrats. The rest of them think Bush was behind the 9/11 attacks.
But now with the U.S. government — as well as the British and German governments — warning of major terrorist attacks this summer, the Treason Lobby is facing the possibility that the "bumper sticker" could blow up in their faces.
The Democrats' entire national security calculus is based on the premise that "we have no important enemies," as stated by former senator Mike Gravel. He's one of the Democratic presidential candidates who doesn't know he's supposed to lie when speaking to the American people.
Ironically, the Democrats' ability to sneer at President Bush hinges on Bush's successful prosecution of the war on terrorism, despite the Democrats. It's going to be harder to persuade Americans that the "war on terrorism" is George Bush's imaginary enemy — the Reichstag fire, to quote our first openly Muslim congressman Keith Ellison — if there is another terrorist attack.
So naturally, they are blaming any future terrorist attacks on the war in Iraq.

It appears to be a sign that you're doing something abundantly right when the leaders of the Canadian Arab Federation and the Canadian Islamic Congress demand that your conference be monitored by the Police Hate Crime Unit. Which is the case with a Fraser Institute symposium taking place this week, entitled "On The Front Line of Immigration, Terrorism and Ethno-Politics."
In an unintentionally amusing joint press release, the groups speak of "major Canadian bigots, Islamophobes, anti-Arab and anti-immigrant writers and media personalities." As opposed, one assumes, to minor Canadian bigots and Islamophobe media personalities. What it all means, of course, is that they disagree with their targets. Yet instead of simply debating with the conference speakers in a quintessentially Canadian manner, they insult them and try to have them silenced.
In fact, the conference the comrades find so irksome boasts an extraordinarily impressive and diverse list of speakers. Columnist Margaret Wente, author Daniel Stoffman, a former director of CSIS, the retired executive director of the Canadian Immigration Service, ambassador Marisa Lino from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, MPs, numerous university professors, award-winning writers and decorated diplomats and scholars.
And the internationally renowned author Bat Ye'or. If the other speakers provoke certain people, this diminutive, gentle and brilliant 74-year-old lady seems to positively terrify them. They urge immigration authorities "immediately to bar Bat Ye'or from entering Canada."

SAN CLEMENTE, CA—Five years after settling in southern California and trying to blend into American society, a six-man terrorist cell connected to the militant Islamist organization Army of Martyrs has reportedly grown too complacent to conduct its suicide mission, an attack on the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.
According to cell leader and boat owner Jameel al-Sharif, the potentially devastating operation, which involves breaching the station's reactor core and triggering a meltdown that could rival the Chernobyl disaster, "can wait."
"We remain wholly committed to the destruction of America, the Great Satan," al-Sharif said. "But now is not a good time for us. The season finale of Lost was such a cliff- hanger that we have to at least catch the first episode of the new season. After that, though, death to the infidels."
"Probably," added al-Sharif, who noted that his nearly $6,000 in credit-card debt from recent purchases of a 52-inch HDTV and a backyard gas grill prevents him from buying needed materials for the attack.
Though the members of the cell said that they "live only to spill the blood of crusaders who oppress Muslims," they cited additional reasons for the delay, including an unexpired free Netflix trial and nagging lower-back pain.

The human rights group says Canada has been obstructionist and exploitive in its efforts to block discussion on the issue.
It notes that Canada and Russia were the only two members of the 47-country Human Rights Council to vote against the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in June 2006.
Amnesty says that since the Conservative government came to power in January 2006, it has been lobbying the UN General Assembly to vote against the declaration, which the previous Liberal government helped draft.
The group contends Ottawa has been encouraging abusive states in Africa, Asia and Latin America to oppose the declaration.
The Tories fear the declaration could run counter to the Constitution, defence laws and existing land deals.
Phil Fontaine, the national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, sent a letter to Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice last month, complaining that Canada's position "seriously undermines indigenous peoples' human rights.''
