Chances are if you’re one of thousands of locals who rely on taxis as a way around the private car, you found it tough hailing a lift Monday morning, February 27. That’s because many cabbies, placards in hand, were circling City Hall to draw attention to the urgent need for reform and to the city’s ongoing Taxicab Industry Review.
Who seemed to have spent most of his time with his hand on his pecker rather than on the helm of the TTC!

Early last November, during a heated discussion with her fellow passengers on a crowded Wimbledon to Croydon tram, a grumpy and stressed 34-year-old former dental receptionist named Emma West proffered up some rather un-PC opinions about immigration and what she saw as the loss of Britain's identity. The single mother of two remained in her seat throughout, and issued no physical or verbal threats, but she complained - profanely - that Britain's identity has been lost due to excessive immigration (she singled out Poles, Nicaraguans, and "blacks"), and opined that these people should go back and "sort out (their) own countries."
She would soon pay a massive price for her expressions. At the time of the incident British Transport officers merely escorted her off the tram and waited with her for the next one, but when one of her fellow passengers posted a cellphone video (language warning) a few weeks later, a nationwide womanhunt commenced - even the leader of Britain's opposition Labour Party got in on the act, issuing an "important appeal" to track her down - and on November 29th West was arrested and charged with racially-aggravated harassment. Denied bail over fears of revenge attacks after her home address was circulated online, the distraught West was sent to a category A prison ("the highest security prison in England…for 'prisoners…whose escape would be highly dangerous to the public or national security') and her children were taken away from her by social services.Now infamous, West would become an entirely unwitting lightning rod for inflamed passions on both sides of the immigration debate. British journalist and CNN host Piers Morgan tweeted that she should be deported, scores of "anti-racist" online commenters called for her to be beaten and/or raped, and multiple death threats were issued. On the other side, anti-immigration proponents and white nationalists of all stripes appropriated her name and image, and practically deified her for her anxious outburst.
Tough gig for a single working-class mum with a history of severe depression.
One week after Emma West was arrested and jailed, four Somali-born Muslim women who had brutally assaulted a passer-by, kicking her bloody and unconscious while shouting "kill the white slag!" and "white b****!", walked free from court. Unlike Emma West, they had not been charged with any race-related offences.

When the government finally stamps out the violence roiling across the United Kingdom, a Tin Ear Award should be immediately given to Theresa May, British Home Secretary. Under pressure to explain why police in London hadn’t deployed water cannons against the mob, May scoffed at the very notion. “The way we police in Britain is not through use of water cannon. The way we police in Britain is through consent of communities,” she told reporters. She has also fretted about using too much force against the mob, saying that Britons enforce the law in the courts, not on the streets.
Nice sentiment (if one that her boss, Prime Minister David Cameron, quickly overruled). May’s position is appropriate for run-of-the-mill crimes against property and persons. But riots aren’t simply criminal acts, but threats to the security of the state. They should be treated as such. Read More »

Welcome to the world of euphemisms.
A riot erupts in Tottenham in London, England. Within days copycat violence occurs throughout the country.
Yet, instead of genuine analysis, we hear about a man shot by the police being “a father of four,” of the rioters being “angry at cutbacks,” and of “years of racism and police brutality.”
I was born a short distance from Tottenham and it was the area of my social life all through my teenage years. I know this place, know the people who live there, and have seen the overwhelming decay of what was always a rough area, but not the hellhole it has become.
Let’s cut the politically correct garbage immediately and speak truth to power.
The overwhelming majority of the young punks who began the rioting, fighting, looting and burning were black. That is truth, not racism.
Remember, though, many of the victims were black, too.
For goodness sake, simply look at the pictures with your own eyes. Tottenham has been a largely black area for more than a generation now, with the traditional population still there but in a minority.
Unlike the U.S., Britain does not have exclusive ghettos.
Places like Tottenham, Hackney, Brixton and most of the other areas hit have enormous black communities, but they live alongside whites. This is why you will also see white kids on the periphery of the trouble.
To provide some context to all this, the last time Tottenham rioted 30 years ago, a young policeman was murdered. His killers admitted later they intended to decapitate him and run around the area with his head.
Yes, these areas are poor and rundown, but the immediate cause of the first riot was the shooting of a member of a notorious and sadistic drug and murder gang. He was shot by the police’s Operation Trident team, risking their lives to stop black-on-black gun crime, while trying to help people on housing estates run by drug dealers and killers, who exploit their own people and torture and shoot for the flimsiest of reasons.
There is no political agenda here, in spite of what white, liberal, guilt-soaked journalists and politicians might try to tell you. The truly poor do not communicate their poverty on expensive cellphones, do not steal giant TVs because they are starving. Britain enjoys free schooling, health care, welfare and a plethora of public services.
The recent cutbacks are minimal. Disregard the propaganda. While extremist agitators are trying to take advantage of over-stretched police and social instability, the people who began all this were thugs.
They are the offspring of broken families, who cannot control their appetite for fathering children with numerous women, who shoot rivals and innocent people with indifference, and who define themselves by how much vulgar jewelry they wear and how much fearful “respect” they receive from law-abiding neighbours.
They are joined now by the white, petulant product of a generation told to despise authority, education and religion, and to rely on the state. Tattooed gargoyles raised on antisocial entertainment, instant gratification, socialist dogma and empty materialism. The triumph of the meaningless, burning a city near you sometime soon. Be warned.

The rise of the NDP first in Quebec and then in the other parts of Canada can be explained. Quebec is the most “statist” of our provinces. The daycare program, Air Canada’s government mandated repair facility, subsidies to Bombardier, Quebec union laws, etc. The NDP, being statist, is a natural choice for a province dependent on transfer payments and the redistribution of the wealth of others.
Outside of Quebec, it can be attributed to our education system. Since the mid-’70s, education has been skewed to reflect political correctness, social justice, Keynesian economics, the evils of business and the importance of social activism. Yes and no. What is catastrophic about socialists is their policies, which the other parties are half-adopting anyway — the Liberals more enthusiastically, the Tories less. If NDPers from the government, at least they have to assume responsibility for their programs. Having to actually govern can have a salutary effect on socialists: It can teach some why their ideas don’t work. Trying to govern Ontario certainly taught that lesson to Bob Rae 20 years ago.

In the still of the night, when you hear the thump of an intruder with unknown intentions, do you really want to rely solely on the speed of the police to respond, or your ability to summon a frightening tone?
As the debate over the gun registry goes around, it's necessary to remember one salient thing: guns solve more problems than they create and in a situation where the bad guy has the advantage, a gun can even the odds for the victim.
I am not a gal who is lacking in personal confidence but as a petite woman, if I were walking down a deserted street at night and had a choice between packing my purse with a cellphone or a handgun, to protect me in an attack, I know which one would give me better odds of being the one left standing.

A Much Need Program HIGHJACKED...

August 22, 2010In March, the province announced that it intended to replace a food supplement program for eligible welfare recipients because it was “not sustainable” and “not achieving the intended results.” Now, Ontario’s most needy are waiting to see what the new program will look like when it is introduced as early as next month.
But the government has yet to reach out with any formal consultations among advocacy groups — let alone with the poor who will be directly affected. That has fed fears that Queen’s Park is not interested in producing a better program, just a cheaper one.
Such a move would hurt some of Ontario’s most vulnerable — those who suffer the twin scourges of poverty and illness — without even succeeding in saving any money.
Ontario’s special diet allowance currently provides $10 to $250 a month to some 165,000 welfare and disability support recipients, enabling them to buy specialized foods to better manage medical conditions, such as multiple sclerosis and diabetes. Restricting their access to those extra funds by tightening the rules will only make them poorer and, consequently, sicker. All that does is transfer the costs, plus additional ones, from the welfare budget to the health-care budget.
Surely the government recognizes it is better to improve someone’s ability to manage their illness through proper diet than it is to sit back and wait for them to arrive in a hospital emergency room.
It is understandable that a government already running a substantial deficit would have concerns about a program whose costs have risen dramatically — from $6 million to $221 million since 2003.
But the underlying problem is not the design of program itself or the alleged fraud suggested by the provincial auditor last fall in a report the government seized on. It is need.
At $585 a month for a single person, the current welfare rate is clearly inadequate to keep a roof overhead and buy food — let alone nutritious food.
For it to do any good to anyone — including taxpayers — the new program must meet the needs of those it purports to serve: welfare and disability support recipients with medical conditions. It is difficult to see how that can be achieved without, the two ministers involved — health and social services — talking to them.

The intolerance of the “tolerant” left is tough to tolerate.
Recent vicious attacks on mayoral candidate Rob Ford and Ward 6 council candidate Wendell Brereton demonstrate the point.
Brereton, a former OPP officer and a pastor, doesn’t support gay marriage. He does support Ford’s fiscal policies and Ford supports Brereton’s candidacy.
Immediately both men were attacked.
One of the accusers was mayoral candidate Sarah Thompson, who slandered Ford with “prejudice and bigotry” on her web page and in the media.
“The mayor can’t be closed to the ideas of others,” Thompson told me.
When I pointed out to her 40% of Canadians do not support gay marriage, I suggested she is closed to their ideas about marriage. Thompson said, “Indeed.”
Two out of five Canadians do not hate gays and are not bigots. They just have a traditional view of marriage that differs from Thompson’s. To many people that is a starting point for conversation, but for Thompson apparently tolerance is when you agree with her.
Mayoral candidate Rocco Rossi is a Roman Catholic who has said, “God has not left City Hall, City Hall has left God.”
Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone sees “a bigger role for faith groups in the urban area, including City Hall.”
Thompson says there is no place in City Hall for religion.
Tolerance doesn’t have to involve driving religion into the closet. No one religion can take over a diverse city.
If a Christian shows up in City Hall with strong views he will find himself in vigorous debate with 43 others who have their own views. None of them should have to park their values — of all things — at the door.
To suggest Christians should — and it seems to predominantly be Christians who are the target of this intolerant leftist view — is the very definition of intolerance.
Helen Kennedy, of the group Equality for Gays and Lesbians Everywhere, refused to acknowledge any view outside hers was legitimate. She called Ford and Brereton’s beliefs on marriage “frightening and offensive.” She condescendingly dismisses the views of four out of 10 who don’t agree with her by saying they “Just don’t cut it.”
I don’t support gay marriage but would support Sun columnist Sue-Ann Levy, who is a married lesbian, for mayor. Seriously Sue-Ann, with John Tory out, please consider it.
Religions in Canada tolerate one another not by subscribing to each other’s beliefs but by supporting the right of all people to worship peacefully as they feel called to do. That is what tolerance is.
Ford isn’t working against gay marriage. That should be enough. That does “cut it.”
I don’t label as bigots or infidels those who do not subscribe to my Christianity.
I’d far rather elect a Jew, a Sikh or a Muslim who declares his or her values than a person who pretends to have values but disingenuously won’t state what they are, while attacking those who do.
The “tolerant” left seems cold to pluralism, which upholds the right of various religious, ethnic, racial and political groups to co-exist in society.
I asked Brereton whether he would still support Ford if Ford were gay. He replied he supported Ford’s fiscal policies and that, “You look at the totality of the man.”
Now, that’s tolerance.

It could be that I’m just noticing a trend that’s been emerging for years, because I happen to have just visited Israel this spring. It was a fascinating experience, beginning with the group travelling — a mixture of Canadian Muslims, Christians and Jews (I’m in the Christian category, although nominally so). I now have a personal appreciation of what survival means to a small country surrounded by people who don’t want it there. Similarly, I have experienced non-media-filtered exposure to what life is like for Palestinians.
At a small dinner in Jaffa during the trip, Tzipi Livni, once Israel’s foreign minister and now leader of the Opposition, spoke about both the external and internal challenges to her country’s existence, including the outsized influence of its ultra-Orthodox Jewish population. Many who have not been to Israel can over-simplify the situation; one side is victims, and the other oppressors. This is the approach that leads to blanket assumptions about Israel, and about Jews in general — the sort of thing I heard at the aforementioned dinner.
