Well, well, well. This is interesting. Just arrived in my inbox, titled "This is Canadian Leadership".

Last week in a Liberal video he knocked my many years of service to the Canadian people.

A modern spin on sinful words

In his outstanding new book, The Misogynist, novelist and biographer Piers Paul Read makes a list of what he describes as “the Seven Sins of the Secular State.”

They are racism, misogyny, homophobia, elitism, smoking, obesity and religious belief. Read discusses all of this with a breathtaking grasp of the absurdities of the contemporary world and the book is essential stuff.

Here are some of my own observations.

Racism. Awful, of course, but when applied today the accusation can mean a justified objection to the demands of a race-based special interest group, or the exposing of particularly high violent crime rates within specific urban areas, just as much as it can signify genuine dislike based on skin colour. In fact the latter is now thankfully rare and comes from identifiable minorities as often as it does white people.

Misogyny. Almost meaningless. Only the deranged hate women, but some people — male and female — disagree with the more radical and fundamentalist demands of the feminist community and are thus marginalized as haters. I once listened as a former British PM was accused of being a misogynist. But, I objected, “I think you’ll find she’s a woman.” “Yes,” came the reply, “but she’s not a sister.”

Homophobia. This one is obvious and, thank goodness, many gay people are now speaking up to tell the zealots to stop trying to silence any opposition by using this contrived word. If you genuinely hate homosexuals you are a sad, broken person. If you object to same-sex marriage, gay adoption, special privileges for a sexual minority, and reject the gay narrative, you merely have an opinion.

Elitism. Oddly enough often used by members of elites to keep other people out. There is none so ostensibly egalitarian and hypocritical as a rich, powerful snob who has embraced leftism. There is nothing at all wrong with elitism if the status has been achieved through talent and hard work. The term generally means your opinion is conservative but your opponent has run out of critical terms of abuse.

Smoking. I don’t. Don’t like it and advise against it. But it’s severely schizophrenic that, as we glamorize and romanticize cannabis and fight to make it legal, we also demonize tobacco to a near unparalleled degree, especially as the long-term health consequences of regular pot use are becoming increasingly obvious.

Obesity. Fat people should lose weight. But only if they want to. Of course it’s a potential health hazard to be overweight, but I’d rather spend time with an obese person who was kind, witty and intelligent than a skinny person who was nasty, boring and stupid. There are many such skeletal dullards.

Religious belief. Horror! The unpardonable sin. Pretend animals are human, worship trees, do what Oprah tells you to do, and weep when U.S. President Barack Obama makes another banal remark, but do not embrace God, particularly if He is a Christian God.

Piers Paul Read has it right and his book is a splendid story of modern man, modern romance and modern manners. It would be a sin not to read the book. No, that’s not one of the seven.

As the candidates for mayor of Toronto jostle for position, each of them has suggestions for dealing with the city's budget deficit: outsource Toronto Hydro, says Rocco Rossi; get the province to kick in more money, says Joe Pantalone; do business in a different way, says Giorgio Mammoliti; freeze hiring for all but essential services, says George Smitherman.
But none of the candidates has dared mention the elephant in the room – the Toronto police budget that stands at nearly $1 billion per year for operating expenses. The police now consume more of Toronto's operating budget than the fire service, Emergency Medical Services and public health combined.
Even worse, how many Torontonians know, when they howl in frustration at yet another hike in property taxes, that a greater percentage of these dollars – 24 per cent – goes to the police than to the TTC, public health, children's services and Emergency Medical Services combined?

Far be it from me to pose as an expert on an issue as confusing as the secretive and murky conditions surrounding how detainees in Afghanistan have been handled in the care of Canada’s military. But recent information has come to light that reveals that the former Liberal government was aware of systemic abuse and torture in Afghan prisons, even though the Liberal Party has been hammering on the Harper government over an alleged “cover-up”. I shouldn’t really say “recent information”, since most of this information has been what you might call, “hiding in plain sight”, in the form of old news articles on the internet.

From 2002 to 2005, the Canadian protocol for Afghan detainees suspected of Taliban ties was to hand them over to U.S. military authorities. The Liberal government at the time was convinced that the treatment of detainees in American custody would be humane, but that soon changed when abuse allegations at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba and Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq surfaced.

What we do know is that Canadian diplomats who were stationed in Kabul repeatedly warned the former Chretien and Martin Liberal governments in 2003, 2004, and 2005 that torture was commonplace in Afghan prisons. Despite these warnings, the Martin government signed an agreement with the Karzai government in December of 2005 to hand over all Canadian-captured prisoners to Afghan authorities, according to official documents by Foreign Affairs.

Well, this is interesting ...

Is it possible? Do Canadians actually ... care about Parliament?

Oooh, a shiny new poll. Ooooh! A shiny new poll showing the Liberals and Conservatives basically neck-and-neck! Neat-o! It’s all about prorogation, The Globe and Mail’s John Ibbitson declares. (Take that, Stephen Harper! People do care about democracy!) Kady O’Malley provides her usual, entertainingly minute analysis over at CBC, and she too thinks prorogation is the likeliest trigger for the narrowing gap, if only for lack of any better explanation. Alas, she cannot explain Ekos’s finding of, ahem, a 14.4% jump for the Liberals in Saskitoba. Frankly, we think Ekos might want to send its polling machine in for a complete systems check.

Back in the Globe, the mellifluous author and columnist, Lawrence Martin (we had to do it, if only just once) is well pleased at this apparent show of support for our beleaguered parliamentary democracy, and suspects Stephen Harper’s unusually hectic interview schedule in the past few days is evidence of “damage control.” Martin also notes a somewhat counterintuitive calming voice on the matter: constitutional scholar Donald Savoie, who suggests we all “take a valium.”
