Leftists Red Book Under Attack...
By MICHAEL COREN, QMI Agency
In his outstanding new book, The Misogynist, novelist and biographer Piers Paul Read makes a list of what he describes as “the Seven Sins of the Secular State.”
They are racism, misogyny, homophobia, elitism, smoking, obesity and religious belief. Read discusses all of this with a breathtaking grasp of the absurdities of the contemporary world and the book is essential stuff.
Here are some of my own observations.
Racism. Awful, of course, but when applied today the accusation can mean a justified objection to the demands of a race-based special interest group, or the exposing of particularly high violent crime rates within specific urban areas, just as much as it can signify genuine dislike based on skin colour. In fact the latter is now thankfully rare and comes from identifiable minorities as often as it does white people.
Misogyny. Almost meaningless. Only the deranged hate women, but some people — male and female — disagree with the more radical and fundamentalist demands of the feminist community and are thus marginalized as haters. I once listened as a former British PM was accused of being a misogynist. But, I objected, “I think you’ll find she’s a woman.” “Yes,” came the reply, “but she’s not a sister.”
Homophobia. This one is obvious and, thank goodness, many gay people are now speaking up to tell the zealots to stop trying to silence any opposition by using this contrived word. If you genuinely hate homosexuals you are a sad, broken person. If you object to same-sex marriage, gay adoption, special privileges for a sexual minority, and reject the gay narrative, you merely have an opinion.
Elitism. Oddly enough often used by members of elites to keep other people out. There is none so ostensibly egalitarian and hypocritical as a rich, powerful snob who has embraced leftism. There is nothing at all wrong with elitism if the status has been achieved through talent and hard work. The term generally means your opinion is conservative but your opponent has run out of critical terms of abuse.
Smoking. I don’t. Don’t like it and advise against it. But it’s severely schizophrenic that, as we glamorize and romanticize cannabis and fight to make it legal, we also demonize tobacco to a near unparalleled degree, especially as the long-term health consequences of regular pot use are becoming increasingly obvious.
Obesity. Fat people should lose weight. But only if they want to. Of course it’s a potential health hazard to be overweight, but I’d rather spend time with an obese person who was kind, witty and intelligent than a skinny person who was nasty, boring and stupid. There are many such skeletal dullards.
Religious belief. Horror! The unpardonable sin. Pretend animals are human, worship trees, do what Oprah tells you to do, and weep when U.S. President Barack Obama makes another banal remark, but do not embrace God, particularly if He is a Christian God.
Piers Paul Read has it right and his book is a splendid story of modern man, modern romance and modern manners. It would be a sin not to read the book. No, that’s not one of the seven.

Is It Any Wonder Jane And Johnny Would Spend Their Time Marching And Protesting
Mount Allison is a small university, with a tiny student body, out there in Sackville New Brunswick, which even Prince Edward Island considers out of the way.
Bigger universities were getting all the attention with silly campaigns fired by perverse notions of justice and rights. The University of Ottawa hitched itself to a campaign to prevent a right-wing author from being allowed to speak there, the banning of authors being a well-known means of protecting the right to free speech. And a collection of cuckoos at the University of Regina announced their horror that the university would show sympathy and support for students left without a father or mother because they'd given their lives in the military.

...I didn't realize, according to experts, that my giving; dropping something in the kettle, adding a couple of $$ to my shopping bill for food banks/kids sports, etc., was creating trauma for the recipients. BTW screw the experts...I will continueto give as long as I am able.

What Will They Get When They Go On School Shooting Spree?
Teens get probation for microwaving cat
You Judge.......
CAMROSE, Alta.(CP) — Two 16-year-old Alberta boys who admitted breaking into a neighbour’s house, putting the family cat in a microwave and then watching it cook to death have been sentenced to one year of probation and 100 hours of community service.
Youth court Judge Shauna Miller also banned the pair from owning pets for two years, which means the family of one of the teens will have to give up a dog they purchased just 10 months ago.
The teens each plead guilty to charges of break, enter and theft, mischief and causing unnecessary pain, suffering and injury to an animal in the grisly incident that took place during Christmas holidays last year.
"The cat was screaming in the microwave for 10 minutes while it was essentially cooked to death," said Crown prosecutor John Laluk.
"What makes it worse is they not only tortured the cat, but they wanted to torture the family. This was a deliberate attempt to inflict pain on the homeowners."
Court heard the two boys were among a group of five young people who broke into the home while the owners were away. Over the course of two nights, they caused at least $10,000 in damage.
Holes were punched in walls. Guitars were smashed. A television was destroyed.
But the most disturbing crime was described in a felt-pen scrawl on the kitchen window and cabinets: "You had a nice cat" and "it’s in the microwave." Inside was the family’s pet, Princess.
The teens apologized in court, but offered no explanation of their actions.
A psychiatric assessment found one of the boys lacks guilt, remorse or empathy, but is capable of understanding his act. The assessment found nothing unusual with the other boy.

Interpreting Toronto's murder tally
What should we make of the large number of homicides in Toronto this year?
While shootings are down, murders -- now at 80 with a month left to go -- are ahead both of last year's pace and even of 2005's notorious year of the gun.
There's a chance Toronto could record its highest murder tally ever -- breaking the previous mark of 89 set in 1991.
Our view is that this is cause for concern, but not panic. In fact, the murder count for any one year doesn't tell us a lot.
For example, while the 41 gun murders to date this year are ahead of the 27 that occurred to this point in 2006, they're down from the 50 recorded to this date in 2005, when the final tally of 52 was a record.
What we do learn from the homicide stats of the past few years is this: Despite living in, statistically, one of the safest cities in North America, we have a persistent problem with gang and gun violence, mainly involving young black men living in urban ghettoes, who are disproportionately both the shooters and victims.
That's not something the police can solve alone.
Here's what needs to be done:
First, a toughening of our revolving door justice system, in which gun-toting gangsters are often back on the street before the police can finish their paperwork on the arrest.
Second, Toronto school trustees need to start backing teachers trying to maintain discipline in classrooms in troubled schools, instead of denying there's a problem, shuffling troubled students between schools, wasting public money on endless studies and offering up meaningless tokenism, such as establishing one "black focused" elementary school. Big deal.
Third, Premier Dalton McGuinty needs to fix the education funding formula, since right now it underfunds boards like Toronto, leaving trustees scrambling to pinch pennies rather than develop sound programs, particularly to address the chronic high dropout rate among black youth.
Finally, until more parents in the communities breeding these gun-toting gangsters start acting like parents instead of overgrown children themselves, particularly absentee fathers, nothing will ever change.
